On that hot July day in '77....................
When the power went off, things must have gotten VERY interesting over at the "Port-of-Authority' that was vack when there was stiil lno"En-Jay-Yee", and you had the dispatchers and management of a number of "suboiban" operators (including carriers GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS) looking for the nearest roll of Tums.....(!!)

Back in the old London Transport days, such hasrily-ossitioned "lopsided" readings were referred to as a "lazy blind" reading.......

MTA a/c in '77..............
About how much of the bus fleet had a/c back in '77?
On the subways, I know the installation of a/c began with the "R-38s" ib the late 60s; of course,, the "Eye-Are-Tee" would not see a/'c--equipped rolling stock until the "R-62"("Silverboids") arrived in the mid-80s......................

Actually, the "married pair" SMEE's from R-26 onwards were being retrofitted with A/C beginning in 1975 to make the commute more bearable for the passengers on the oldest of the three subway divisions. But the "Silverboids" were the first on the "Eye-Are-Tee" to have A/C from the outset. |

Thanks for the memory jog; I had forgotten about that IRT a/c upgrade.
What about on the bus side......I doubt that any buses were retrofitted for a/c; either they had a/c, or they did not.
Am I correct on this?

When the last H&M "Black" cars were retired in late 1965, PATH then boasted an all a/c-equipped fleet...........

BTW:

No A/C retrofitting on buses; the pre-1966 lot (both 'Tee-Yay' and ' 'stoa') without A/C remained such till their 1983-84 retirements. By this time, the oldest "Tee-Yay" buses would have been 16 years old; the oldest " 'stoa" buses, 14. There were over 1,000 supposedly A/C buses operating as of 1977 (I say "supposedly" because on a lot of them, the A/C didn't work).
2,653 of the total bus fleet were officially A/C as of July 1977, from the 1967 " 'stoa" and "Tee-Yay" A/C batwing Fishbowls to the last of the "Dangerfields" (ten of which - 9155-9159 and 9160-9164 - were actually 53102-8-1's, all others of the 1973-77 set built by 'Flx' having been 53102-6-1's). Close to 2,000 were pre-1966 non-A/C. |

THANK YOU; this is EXACTLY the info I was looking for!
Thinking now of "Pee-Es-En-Jay", when they were taking delivery of the "Jetson" Fishbowls in 1960; while the "suboibans" all had a/c, a/c would have to wait for their transit bretheren..............
