At one time, Philadelphia had one of the largest fleets of PCCs in nation;from what I've read, scrapping of the oldest carswas just beginning at the time of the infamous Woodland carbarn fire in 1975 (multiple cars were lost)
Philly's fleet was also diverse, with replacement cars coming from other properties. including the TTC.
After the new KAWASAKI LRVs entered service in the early 1980s, the fate of the PCCs was indeed sealed (of course, this also held true for the RED ARROW's rolling museum fleet.
Not to mention SEPTA's many "temporary" conversions to bus routes.
Again, the aforementioned book is indeed MORE than worth the price1
