Sounds like the rail companies were still solidly in control when he made his proposal. If he had come along 20 years later, things might have gone his way.

"South Of The Border"............

I've often wondered how many retired PE and LAMTA buses were sold for futrher use south of the border.

Several years ago, a photo was posted in a topic here(I cannot recall on which board), that showed heavy traffic in downtown Lima, Peru
.
A number of Old Looks were in the picture, still painted in PE and :AMTA colors...............

I knew about Mexico but not Peru. Those would be interesting photos to see.

Though quite a few retired PE cars went "south of the border" after retirement, none of the "Blimps" were sold for service elsewhere.............

Perhaps they were too large and too old to be of use on most systems.

The newer NWP blimps were run hard on the PE. These were known as the "hot rod" blimps due to their aluminum bodies. At the end of service in 1961, most of the survivors were the SP blimps which had steel bodies and were built about 1911. True, there probably weren't many street railways that could handle anything that size.

When I was a kid, my Dad took the family on a ride to Long Beach from LA and we rode these cars. That was in 1959, two years before abandonment. My Dad was a big interurban fan. Must be where I got the bug from.

I always found it interesting that, while so many associate the "Blimps"only with the PE, they were, as we know, second-hand units from the East Bay (SP and NWP) andran on "commuter" lines ,ore in sync with electric operations in the NY area.......
