W.B.:

Good point to bring up.

It was desecration enough that the "Pee-Yay" turned the sleek, stylish interior of the old "Port-of-Authority" into nothing more than a glorified 80's shopping mall. Sad

The TOTAL destruction of the stunning, iconic 1950 exterior facing 8th Avenue, and replacing it with the hideous monstrocity that is still there today, was nothing short of wanton VANDALISM.

The historic Toronto terminal was indeed a true MONUMENT to the glory days of intercity bus travel, an era, sadly, we will never see the likes of again....... Sad

Is it my imagination, or is the new "toiminal" one of those soulless, sterile "monstrosities" we keep hearing about anything that's "modern"?

W.B.:

RIGHT ON THE MARK, MY FRIEND (sadly) Sad

These days, "modern" automatically translates into HIDEOUS!! Evil or Very Mad

'nuff said. Sad

Just thinking now.........

Odd that GREYHOUND never had its own dedicated terminal in Newark; the State's largest city.

Since Penn Station opened in the 1930s; GREYHOUND has its ""toiminal" there, albeit but a "curb stop".

Just where in Newark did "the Running Dog" call in Newark prior to the opening of Penn Station, is still a mystery to Your's Truly (perhaps their buses stopped at the massive PS Terminal; MARTZ did, for many years)

GREYHOUND, way back when, also called at Elizabeth............

We've discussed this totally unique "Noo Yawk" bus terminal in the past, but I think, in light of this topic, it should be "revisited"........

Bus turntables.......

Back in the day, the only other bus turntable in the New York area was at the CNJ's Jersey City terminal, where, until 1958, B&O train connection buses from New York (arriving via ferry) were turned.

This unique turntable was located just beyond the train sheds; buses used a paved roadway (formerly occupied by Tracks#'s2 and 3) to access the lower level of the ferry terminal...........

for a time in Guadalarja, the trolleybuses were turned on a turntable located in a tunnel (see top photo/info)

Imagine the MTA or NJT using such a setup(!!) Wink Rolling Eyes

From what I've seen of model drawings, as bad as the current "Pea-Yay-Bee-Tee" has been since their vandalistic "remodeling" in the late 1970's, the new one about to be erected will no doubt make the current "monstrocity" look as elegant as the original 1950 terminal by comparison.

W.B.:

Guess seeing a BUS "toiminal" constructed that actually LOOKS like a BUS "toominal" is but wishful thinking. Sad

Still, I have NO REGRETS over the razing of the current monstrocity ("TINO": "Terminal In Name Only").......the real damage took place over 40 years ago....... Evil or Very Mad

I was actually inside that "toiminal," twice, both in early 2002 - first, en route to Utah to attend the Slamdance Film Festival where my film, Lefty-Right, was up for an award ("Too Short to Be a Feature, but Too Long to Be a Short"), and secondly on my way back to "Noo Yawk." I could see the "moderne," but at that juncture (plus, it didn't help that it was late at night), it was rather dull.

I also seem to have been in what passed for a "toiminal" in "Shik-aga," likewise twice. Second time, as the passengers discharged for a tune-up, I took the "Blue Line" subway for a few stops (was struck by how much the roadbed resembled the "Eye-En-Dee" here but for no protective cover on the "toid" rail) - and, back at the "toiminal," was switched to a more express bus that would take me to "Noo Yawk" sooner. (Good think I took all my bags with me whilst doing so.)

W.B.:

VERY interesting, indeed; glad you got to "pass through" that "Moderne" facility in "Kleev-land"! Wink

Today's modern bus/rail "toiminals" all pretty much of the same ilk; bland, cold, soulless, and, sadly, all-too-often BIZARRE. Embarassed

So much for "progress"........... Razz
