Earlier in thus topic, I'd mentioned trailer operations..........

As I had previously reported, PSNJ operated trailers (OSGOOD BRADLEY) until 1935; the car bodies were removed from the trucks and used as waiting shelters.

These trailers were only operated on the busiest ESSEX Division (Newark) routes.

The following 1936 photo is quite rare, and is worthy of some comments.......

https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?117002

(courtesy: nycsubway.org)

Here we see an elderly "High 2200" series car hauling a (barely visible) trailer.

1935 was the year that PSNJ retired the trailers; the "2200" series cars (then some of the oldest in the fleet) were equally divided between the HUDSON and ESSEX Divisions (the last were retired in 1937)

Note that this "2200" has been stripped of its wooden destination/route panels, illuminated route number boxes, and is devoid of passengers.

IMHO, this photo (most likely taken somewhere in Newark, possibly near the ROSEVILLE carhouse) is showing a soon-to-be scrapped "2220", towing an OOS trailer, heading for the infamous Passaic Wharf facility (Newark) where hundreds of surplus cars were scrapped from the late 1930s through 1943.

As I said, this photo is one of the more rare PS pictures..........

Interesting about the PSNJ trailers. Next challenge would be to find a photo highlighting the trailer!

As I've mentioned before, PE ran trailers on the Long Beach line because it was relatively flat. When they purchased the "Long Beach 1200's" which were similar to the earlier "San Berdoo" 1200's but geared slightly lower, they ordered a few trailers. Usually run two motors to a trailer but sometime one on one. The 1200's were retired in 1951 and scrapped. Thereafter, the blimps held down the Long Beach line until the end. The 1200's were superior cars to the blimps but didn't hold as many passengers so they got the ax.

Cyberider:

Here in New York, both the IRT and MBT rostered many trailers, in both subway and elevated operations; the newer IND rostered motor cars only.

Both the DL&W (later E-L) and LIRR also rostered many trailers in their large MU fleets.

The SIRT also operated trailers ("ME-1s")

The DL&W/E-L and LIRR also operated "control trailers"; these were cars that could be used on the ends of trains, equipped with motorman's controls)

Trailers were also once commonplace on the London "tubes" for decades; motor cars were designated "DM" units "Driving Motors".........

Cyberider:

Photos of PS trailers in operation of very rare, to say the least; to date, I've only seen perhaps two or three

In "THE TIME OF THE TROLLEY" (Middleton) there is a 1920s rush hour photo taken at Broad & Market ("Four Corners") in Newark on the bottom of page #177, showing a trailer pulled by a deck roof car.

Interestingly, the "Compromise" roof cars never hauled the trailers, only the deck roof cars..........

Interesting. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have that Middleton book.

Getting closer to home, I don't remember any trailers in the LARy fleet. They did have one class of cars that could MU but apparently it wasn't necessary nor very successful and was only done for a few years.

Cyberider:

"THE TIME OF THE TROLLEY" indeed belongs in EVERY traction buff's library! (I've had my copy since 1971!) Wink

The only PSNJ cars to have MU capabilities were the "3500s"; they originally ran on the "Fast Line" (between Newark and Trenton) and were geared to reach speeds of up to 75MPH! Shocked

The big "3500s" were also the backbone of the busy "HUDSON RIVER LINE" (125th Street Ferry terminal at Edgewater to Paterson) until the line went to buses in late 1938.

However, by the later 1920s, PS removed the MU hardware from these speedy cars (two-car trains were the max).........

PSNJ's busy Paterson-Broadway terminal (Paterson) was once the busy transfer point for several inter-divisional car lines, as well as bus routes.

In this nostalgic 1937 view, we see two "3500s" (the car on the left is running on a fan trip; the "HUDSON RIVER" line, like the other car lines then serving Paterson, went to buses in later 1938)

Note, also, the big PSNJ "YELLOW" buses (Model "Z") (these were BRUTES to handle!)

ASV's also served this terminal until 1948; this station later served TNJ and NJT buses.

Between c-1924 and late 1928. NJRT's Jewetts (via a new track connection in Paterson) also served this terminal (the NJRT jad been taken over by PS about 1924)

PSNJ's broad gauge lines (SOUTHERN Division).........

It is interesting that the PS lines in the Camden area were broad gauge.

In the early 1930s, when surplus cars from the Camden area were shipped (by rail) north for refurbishing for the then-abuilding Newark City Subway, the cars had their original trucks swapped out for standard gauge trucks.

Camden's car lines were replaced by ASVs and buses much earlier than the car lines then operating in northern New Jersey (note buses in the background in both photos)..........

"NYO"

*It is also interesting to note, that, like the ESSEX Division lines, the Camden lines were numbered.

However, unlike their ESSEX Division counterparts, the Camden cars did not carry illuminated roof route number boxes.........

Further:

It is also interesting to note that "Compromise"-roof cars never operated on any of the Camden routes; all rolling stock were conventional deck roof cars.

On an interesting note, in Camden, when more modern buses and ASVs began arriving in the mid/later 1930s, PS utilized obsolete front-engine buses as waiting shelters.

What is interesting is that the buses were still driveable; large signs were affixed to the sides reading:

"WAITING BUS"

During certain heavy traffic times, these retired buses could be driven to any location, and utilized as waiting shelters as the need dictated......

Here is a very rare photo of PSNJ's Newton Avenue carbarns/shops in Camden, as it appeared in 1930........

https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?117033

Notice that not only are there no "Compromise"-roof cars in the yards, but also, note the railroad-roof cars (these were the "low" 3500s; the "high 3500s" were double-ended deck-roof cars, which ran in Northern New Jersey)

Also, note broad-gauge trackage.........

Thalnks, NYO. Interesting stuff. Did you once tell me of a comprehensive book on PSNJ or on NJ streetcars/interurbans? If so, maybe it's time for me to try to locate a copy.

Cyberider:

I have in my library:

"TROLLEY TREASURES: THE WARTIME YEARS IN NEW JERSEY (Compromise-roof cars); Mankoff/Wrege, (Volume 2)

"INTERURBAN INTERLUDE" (Quinby); this book is about the NJRT, which was taken over by PS in the 1920s.

"PIBLIC SERVICE OF NEW JERSEY'S ALL-SERVICE VEHICLE" (Wikins/Phramer); this is an EXHAUSTIVE work on the ASV, with hundreds of rare photos, operating manual info, maps, diagrams, etc......AWESOME work!!!!!!!!!

"THE UNION TROLLEY LINE"* (Brinkmann/NRHS)

*This was the line which was one of the first conversions to ASV (1935)

These are the books I have so far on PS ALL are OUTSTANDING works!)
