Fellows:
During the many months of campaigning for the New York Mayoral Race, there has been much talk (including both strong agreement and disagreement) regarding improving MTA bus service.
There has been much discussion on the following:
More dedicated bus lanes
BRT corridors
Timed traffic lights (which favor the buses)
Free service (this last has sparked a LOT of debates, among many involved parties, as well as the general public; the president of the TWU is all for this, citing increased driver safety, resulting from less attacks; I heard this on 1010 WINS)
Now, as I do not live in "Noo Yawk", I am not at all qualified to voice my own opinions on this topic, but thought it might make for a bit of interesting discussion, at the very least.........

As can be seen here in these detailed, illustrated article, BRT operations are common place in cities around the world.
BUT, the giant jackpot question here, is, CAN it work in "Noo Yawk", on a "full scale" basis (what about BRT in the outer boroughs?)

Interesting that they're using the same name as a certain type of subway car (of the "AB" type) that put another "BRT" on the map, over a century ago, and had a run on "Noo Yawk's" subways that would only be exceeded some 53 years later by the R-32's, which were but a pup when the last of the "Broadway Battleships" were retired a month after the first moon landing.
But as to the crux of this, didn't Brooklyn, from about 1948 to 1960, have their own "BRT"? Like, certain "trackless trolleys" built by St. Louis Car?
If it were tried today, they'd look every bit as insipid and nightmare-inspiring as what is in most other cities today - both here and around the "woild." |

W.B.:
Ahhh, you also caught the "BRT Standard", and connected it with both the old Brooklyn Rapid Transit and their famed "Broadway Battleship"!
I've read about) (and have seen 1950s artist's renditions" of underground "busways" in "Shik-aga", in addition to self-guided expressway "BRT", utilizing, of all things, MU trains of postwar "Oddballs"!
As to the future of BRT here in "Noo Yawk", given the ever-precarious state of local and federal "poly-tix", it's really anyone's guess as to just what the future holds.........

Agreed.
You and I BOTH know what will come to pass if "BRT" starts to really take hold in "Noo Yawj"; a fresh infestation of giant, mutated caterpillars, silverfish, and other assorted monstrous insects.
Awhile ago, I had heard some talk of maybe utilizing the long-abandoned LIRR Rockaway Line as a possible "BRT" corridor.
Personally, I'd rather see it brought back as a new "sotface" subway line.........
