Of course, that was DECADES before "SAS" stood for "Second Avenue STUBway".........
Quuck question:
Are any "Brighton Belles"("R-68s"( still assigned to the "Q", or is it all now NTT "Brontos"?

I'd have to look, but last I checked, it's still on some routes. Last I "hoid," they were still holding down the B, D, N, Q, W and S (Franklin Shuttle) trains. It's getting late now, but within the week, I'll do one of my subway expeditions as to what's what with the N, Q and W viz the "Brighton Belles." And see if any of the new 211's are part of the mix. |

Further comparisons........

What I find interesting is that ALL H&M "Black" cars (Class "B"-"J") all shared the same "ogee"-type roof (the last "Black" cars were built by ACF, while the IRT's "WF" cars were built by St. Louis); unlike the "WF" cars, the "Black" cars were never equipped with bulkhead sign boxes.
Interesting, also, is that the postwar "Artens", along with the "R-12s/14s" also utilized this style roof............

And on the WF cars, I see they had a thing for dashes in-between words:
"GUN-HILL-ROAD" |

W.B;
That I have always found interesting (and unusual!)
This would have been like the "Black" cars' side roller curtains reading:
"JOURNAL-SQUARE"
"33RD-STREET"
"HUDSON-TERMINAL"
But then, like the "Aitch & Em", the "Eye-Are-Tee" had no shortage of interesting "quirks........

Just was thinking.......
Given the threat of extremely high tides and beach erosion with the upcoming nor'easter, I am wondering if there will be any flooding concerns at St. George, and especially at Tottenville.
I would think that this would also effect ferry operations; interestingly, this will be the first "high impact" storm encountered by the new "Staten Island Rattlers" ("R-211s") since they entered service......wonder how they will perform.........

Oh yeah, that's the other thing. The "Rattlers." Reminds me of many a scene in Airplane! where Lloyd Bridges says, "I sure picked the wrong time to . . . (put in vice here)." That's what came to my mind in terms of the retirement of the evergreen "Fordy-Fours." (I brought up the issue of performance on SubChat in response to a question about the new cars.)
But also, about the Rockaways, which have been punished enough since Superstorm Sandy. |

W.B.:
Indeed, subway service to the Rockaways could be seriously impacted (recall the horrific damages inflicted upon the line's infrastructure during Sandy)
Too, the lines running through open cuts, lined with trees, often on both sides of the cut (I"m thinking the BMT in Brooklyn); think, also, LIRR and MN.
Also, yards, etc, near any shoreline (thinking now of NJT's yards at Hoboken)
NJT's North Jersey Coast Line often faces some significant issues during extreme weather events (plus, there is catenary as far south as Long Branch).
Also, wet leaves on slippery rails (how will the "Staten Island Rattlers" handle that issue?)
Let's wait and hope that there will not be too many serious issues......

Also...........
There could, indeed, also be weather-related issues on "the tubes" (PATH), on the extensive open sections west of Grove Street; also recall several subway stations being transformed into raging rapids, by rampaging flood waters, during the last several rainstorms.
Too, think of how MTA bus service could also be affected (flooding, detours, etc).......

Meanwhile, it was noted that when OMNY takes full effect next year, transfers will be eliminated and on buses, you won't be able to deposit your coins into the machines next to the bus driver's seat. |
