From what I could see, it looked to me like their "toid" rail was similar to what the original "Eye-Are-Tee" sections (read: 1904) used.
But it also juxtaposed with the Mets winning their "foist" of two (to date) "Woild" Championships. Too bad the "Moit" didn't survive that triumph. Unlike with the "Toid Aven-yah" el in "da Bronx" whose 1938 WF cars did manage to hold on for that - but barely. |

I've "hoid" some totally-unrealistic ideas for rebuilding both the "Moit" and the old Culver shuttle......AIN'T NO WAY, JOSE!!!
If these old elevated lines weren't wanted decades (by the MTA) they certainly would NOT be needed TODAY.
IMHO, the "Culver" began its long, long slide into decay.....and eventual oblivion......when it was no longer a "through" route, and was reduced to shuttle status.............

At the time the Shuttle was shut down in 1975, you still had some ancient "Arnines" cavorting around the system, and the MTA bus fleet was 100% Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" (free transfers were issued for the B35)
Houses have since been built over a portion of the former elevated Culver ROW..........

At the time of the closure, " 'stoa" routes in Manhattan and the Bronx still didn't offer transfers, a policy dating back to the settlement of the January 1962 TWU strike against FACL. That would change in the fall, when the fare increased from 35 to 50 cents, and the "Em-Tee-Yay" instituted a half-fare "Add-a-Ride" transfer system all around.
The last FACL "Jetsons" and the earliest of the "Tee-Yay's" lot were retired by this time, but you still had those futuristic-looking buses criss-crossing Manhattan, Brooklyn and two zones of Queens on key "Tee-Yay" routes.
Another point: The Culver Shuttle's closure came before the "foist" of the R-46's began entering the subway system. |

Indeed, the transit scene in "Noo Yawk" was far more "diverse" and "colorful" than it is today; don't forget, back then, the IRT was still 100% SMEE, and the now-iconic "Fordy-Fours" were still proudly displaying their classic blue stripes.
I did not know of the Culver Shuttle until I got my first copy of Stan Fischler's (softcover) "UPTOWN, DOWNTOWN"; of course, by that time, the old "Culver" had already been abandoned (the "Indiana Jones" in me would have had a field day, exploring that "lost line")........

This was about as close to the old Culver Shuttle (at least in proximity to) that the veteran "Fordy-Fours" ever got............

What was the newest class of car to operate on the Culver Shuttle?
I'm thinking of a few types, but am not totally positive.

I would concur; I've seen a number of photos of the "27s/30s" on the Shuttle, in the years after the "Broadway Battleships" (Standards) were retired..........
