(SEE PREVIOUS POST)
Further:
In NY Harbor, the last walking-beam ferries operated on the Tottenville (SI)-Perth Amboy (NJ) Ferry, operated by the SIRT until 1948.
These boats were :
"PERTH AMBOY"
"CHARLES GALLOWAY".
In 1948, the crossing was sold to "SUNRISE FERRIES", which used small open-deck diesel boats; these boats ran until late 1963, when the ferry was closed down (Mom and I rode these "little ferries" quite a few times, back in the dsy!) |

Footnote:
The only sidewheel ferry operated by the "Key" was the ex-SP "SAN PEDRO"; the KEY purchased the boat in 1938, renaming her 'TREASURE ISLAND".
She transported construction workers to her namesake island for the upcoming Exposition.
She carried fairgoers to the Fair from the re-activated Key Ferry Pier from 1939 through 1940.
In 1942, she went to the US NAVY, and was docked in Oakland as a floating barracks......

Key System ferry/streetcar connection........
Streetcars connected with the boats of the "Richmond-San Rafael Ferry" at the spartan "terminal" at the Richmond Pier.
It is also interesting to note that ex-LVT cars were used on this line (#2).............

NYC streetcar/ferry connections)
Both TARS and (until 1936) NY Rys. cars connected with trans-Hudson ferries at several locations; note; South Ferry (Staten Island Ferry) /NY Rys.
Connections to trans-Hudson ferries were made at:
Chambers Street
Debrosses Street
W. 23rd Street
W. 42nd Street
W. 125th Street
(NOTE: Connections in Queens and Brooklyn not shown; also, East River connections not included))
At St. George, privately-owned streetcars connected with the ferries to Manhattan and Brooklyn..........

Lots of possibilities with all those options. Hard to be convinced that things are better now. (NOT) |

TOTALLY AGREE.
And, sadly, NOTHING remains of either the streetcar networks nor the ferries they once connected in Manhattan with survive today.

Until 1963, Los Angeles not only had streetcars and trolleybuses, but also, double ended ferries.
One of the historic Art Deco terminals today survives as a maritime museum...........

Thanks, NYO. Another So. Cal. ferry was the San Diego/Coronado ferry. We lived in San Diego in 1958/9 and I thought it was exciting when we took the ferry to Coronado. Now, they've built a bridge there too. |

Thanks, NYO. Looks like there may have been two ferries at the time we lived there. I wasn't paying attention as to which one. It was just so exciting driving our Willy's car onto it and going across to Coronado. |

Cyberider:
You are welcome!
Growing up within minutes of NY Harbor in the 1960s, I have many childhood memories of autos and trucks rumbling on and off the old ferryboats.....ALWAYS fun AND exciting!
