Certainly, the Old Looks (and MACKS) lasted longer, perhaps not all that surprisingly............ |
The Twin "Oddballs" didn't even hang around to see the first "Jetsons" introduced onto the streets of Brooklyn in 1959, that's how much true "Dangerfields" of their time they were.
The Brooklyn bus routes were divided amongst different divisions: the "Brooklyn Bus Division," no doubt from old routes that were bus from the beginning, run by the old Brooklyn Bus Corporation; and "BMT Surface Division," a combo of B&QT streetcar, "trackless trolley" and bustituted routes. After the last of the second-named converted to bus service in 1960, that latter entity became the "BMT Bus Division," as based on old transfers. |

Almost resemblant of tin cans by the end, no? Sounds like a forerunner in some respects to today's "BINO's" . . . |

W.B.:
They often say, "appearances are deceiving"; IMHO, I believe that also well describes the postwar "Oddball".
To see them in on the streets, they DID appear to be a "hefty"-looking vehicle, but, it would seem that they were not all that "crash worthy".
Sure, even a "Kramden" or a "Patton" could take a pretty rough beating if an accident was severe enough, BUT, without a doubt, they were built of far "sterner stuff" than the postwar "Oddballs"........

Upcoming...........
This month, on the 31st, it will then be 70 YEARS since the last Brooklyn PCC's pulled down their poles for the last time........
Brooklyn has now been without trolleys far, far longer than they had them..........

69 years, actually; it's NEXT year that'll be the 70th anniversary of the last "Pea-See-See's" running in Brooklyn. We're still in 2025, after all . . . |

W.B.:
MATH was NEVER my strong point (as is obvious!)
Funny, though........
The "Bee-oh-Tee" ordered new postwar (St.Louis) trolleybuses for Brooklyn (which were only in service for a little more than 12 years), and, yet, did not order any postwar PCCs.
Just wondering.........

Three "woids": Fiorello La Guardia. HATE, HATE, HATED "noisy, clangy" streetcars. No matter whether they were PCC or not. And even after the "Little Flower's" term as Mayor ended and he passed away, his antipathy trickled town to the "Bee O'Tee" and its successor "Tee-Yay." |

W.B.:
It woud indeed seem, then, that "Lah-Gward-ee-ah's intense hated of "noisy, clangy" streetcars was indeed most contagious, infecting the City "powers" many years later.
IMHO, the BoT WASTED their money on the new postwar Brooklyn trolleybuses, given how short a stay they had in operation.
The money, (IMHO) would have been better spent purchasing new diesel buses.............

Funny thing was, they DID "poichase" new diesel buses. Including the "Gee-Em" oddballs (the 40' TDH-5101 and 102" wide TDH-4510) and the "Bingham Macks." Along with those St. Louis "trackless trolleys." |

Forgot about those "Gee-Ems".

On this date in 1969, another era in electric public transport ended in Brooklyn forever, when "The Moit" was closed down.
Not only was this the very last of the original Brooklyn elevated lines, it was also the last day of operation for the iconic "Q" cars, the very last wooden cars in service in America.......
The streetcars, the trolleybuses, the "Standards" ("Broadway Battleships"), the "Qs", Steeplechase, and the hallowed Ebbets Field were now all relegated to the history books......
