I know you've told me in the past that the cruise ship companies no longer give tours of the engine room; heck, I would have been MORE that satisfied just to go up on the bridge! Wink

"NYO"!"

They don't do it because the stairway's to reach them are considered too steep for most cruise ship passenger's to negotiate, and the loud roar requires ear protection devices. Some, but not all cruise ships offer "behind the scene's tours", usually but not always for a price, that includes visits to the bridge, the engine control room (just video monitors and computer screens), galley, laundry, storage areas, environmental areas, crew living area's (but not cabins), theater backstage and dressing room, etc. I have taken many of these on various ships.

The one engine room that was always open to passenger's was on the former American Queen...the last, and largest sternwheel, steam powered riverboat ever built. They had easy access, self interpretive descriptions, and the crew was always happy to get visits from interested passengers.
Sadly AQV went bankrupt this year, and the boat was laid up. It will take a lot to restore it to service, so probably unlikely, unfortunately...

As always, GREAT info....thanks for sharing! Wink

You mentioned the "AMERICAN QUEEN"; this got me to thinking of the Mark Twain-era of classic riverboats; being that the Mississippi (and similar waterways) were so shallow, it was not possible for these graceful vessels to have deep hulls where the boiler room/engine room would have been located; the engines/boilers (and early electric generators) would have been located on the main deck.

An EXCELLENT "below the decks" film, regarding classic ocean liners of decades past, was 1960s' nail-biting "filmed all-at-sea" drama "THE LAST VOYAGE", starring Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone, Woody Strode, and George Sanders.

See:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Voyage

Here, the movie-goer got a truly "in depth" look at what was going on within the bowels of a typical liner of that era; I NEVER tire of watching this classic film!

Clearly, a LOT of research went into the making of this classic film! Wink

Here's a most interesting "in depth" page; there are also a number of very interesting photos here, as well as plans for steamboats/paddle-wheelers that go back several centuries............

A very interesting article on a "steamboatin' man"/inventor whose name has long been forgotten, except, perhaps, the most astute historians..........

This is an excellent article w/ some great photos.

Sadly, it looks like the saga of this long-neglected (and most historic) liner may be drawing to a sad close............... Sad

Just saw a brief report on Eyewitness News (ABC 7) that the end of the long-derelict (and long disrespected) "SS. UNITED STATES" is now at kand, the once-grand liner is now on the move, heading south, eventual destination, off the Florida coast.

Yes, this once-grand, stately, record-breaking ship is now destined to become the world's largest artificial reef.

What a tragic disgrace, what a tragedy, what a sad day for those of us who recalled (and were in awe of) the great transatlantic liners of many decades ago.

As I type these words, in all honesty, I cannot even bear to write more......I'n truly saddened by this news, but, in all honesty, had the gut feeling all along that this going to be the stately liner's eventual disposition. Crying or Very sad

Further.........

A few decades ago, I HAD hopes that the fabled "SS UNITED STATES" would eventually be renovated/restored, and turned into a floating museum/hotel, or, at least, something along those lines.

Alas, the like fearsome Luca Brasi in "THE GODFATHER", this majestic, historic, record-breaking liner will soon be "sleeping with the fishes". Crying or Very sad

A sad end, indeed, for one of the most beautiful and stately liners to ever cross "the pond".......... Sad

Also:

In Brian J. Cudahy's excellent book"AROUND MANHATTAN ISLAND AND OTHER MARITIME TALES OF NEW YORK". he devotes an entire chapter to the "UNITED STATES":

"WHEN THE SS UNITED STATES WON THE NORTH ATLANTIC BLUE RIBBON".

Excellent writing and photos......alas, where did yesterday fo?

Agreed, a very sad end to what was one of the greatest ships in history. Shame on us for not saving it, even as a museum. Crying or Very sad
