[NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629]

This miniscule "system" consists of only one line and but six stations, making it the shortest subway in the world.

It was originally built in 1956 (it had been planned to be part of a larger, more extensive system), but was closed in 1986 for extensive modernization, and re-opened several years later.

The small, two-car trains (counterbalanced) utilize manual doors (as is the case in many European cities); these doors can also be operated by train operators.

It only carries some 2,000 riders each day, and, not surprisingly, is a money-losing operation.

Interestingly, the line is a peculiar "hybrid" of both rapid transit and funicular........

Further note......

For some years after the line first opened, there were wall advertisements on the station platforms, as well as news kiosks; the original cars themselves bore some sort of resemblence to the rubber-tired Paris Metro rolling stock of the late 1950s and 1960s.

Historical note........

The Haifa "subway" was not the only underground transit operation to use cable traction.

Glasgow's subway (opened in the 1890s) utilized cable operation until the trains themselves were electrified in 1935.

The trains were (and still are) quite tiny (especially when compared to our subways); the original cars ran through the 1970s.

The orange trains that replaced them are now themselves being replaced by ultra-modern (driverless) trains) which I've dubbed "SoQ" ("Spawn of Quartermass"); these cars are simply downright UGLY!

When the orange trains were originally introduced, the Subway was quickly dubbed the "Clockwork Orange", as the line runs in an oval around the city.

This is an interesting little rapid transit system with a rich history.

The interiors of the cars closely resemble those of the "deep level" tubes in London...........

Glasgow Subway's rolling stock through the years: (as you can see, they bear no resemblence to any American rapid transit rolling stock)

The original cars ("coaches") were indeed quite charming, and almost toylike!

Note also that the original rolling stock utilized scissor gates instead of doors..........
