W.B.:

Recall I mentioned the ending of "A THOUSAND CLOWNS" (1965); I learned that the brownstone lined-street where "Murray" (Jason Robards) lived was 94th Street, between Columbus and CPW; as I had noted, a Fishbowl had just pulled off one of the "main drags", and was pulling up to the stop on the corner, which "Murray" was dashing for.

The bus was at such a distance, that one could not decipher what route itr was running on.

Any idea?

I had posted the link to this early 1960's "TWILIGHT ZONE" photo quite awhile back elsewhere, but, felt I should (for obvious reasons!) post it again here.

A LOT of classic "Noo Yawk" bus action going on here!) Wink

If the stop were at Columbus, it would have been either the 7 or 11; if CPW, the 10.

Can't tell if that " 'stoa" bus traveling WB on 42nd Street was a "Jetson" or a "Bullet." (Possibly the former.) It was running on the M-104, I.I.N.M., that's for sure. By that, that episode was likely from the final (1963-64) season.

W.B.:

Note the autos/taxis in this photo; the newest appear to be 1962 models.

So, as we all know, "Jetsons" (first generation Fishbowls) were manufactured between 1959 and 1962; IF this photo dated to at least 1963, then a "Bullet" Fishbowl could have been on hand.

Note also, the veteran ST "Patton" in the mix...........

BTW: Thanks for the info on the route(s) on 94th Strret ("A THOUSAND CLOWNS") Wink

In this circa-1959/1960 picture from the "TWILIGHT ZONE" (42nd Street, near GCT) SURFACE buses are indeed in great profusion (note also 5106)............ Very Happy

Oldest nycsubway.org "stoa" photos depicting "Dangerfields" date to 1971; not surprising, though, to see these oft-neglected workhorses already working up in "da Bronx", instead of the more "upscale" routes which were then pretty much the domain of the Fishbowls.

The lack of the stylish script above the windows is also quite evident here; IMHO, the bus simply does not look "finished"............

That was true of the "Tee-Yay" lot of those A/C "Dangerfields" (4000-4202), their not looking "finished" owing to the 'M' emblem near the entrance on the passenger side, and the window on the driver's side. I'd have no doubt that those "Dangerfields" would have been intended as a replacement for the "Shermans" that were crisscrossing "da Bronx" up to that point. Just as, three years later, the last of the "Bullet" Fishbowls (4860-4919) basically replaced the last of the FACL/ST "Jetsons." And how, earlier in 1973, the last of the "Tee-Yay's" Fishbowls (T6H-5309A 6200-6349 and T6H-5310A 6901-6956) led to the last of their "Shermans" likewise being put out to pasture. (This incomplete look also applied to the 1968 and 1971 "Tee-Yay" orders of the T6H-5305A's, the latter the very last to bear the green paint scheme.)

As well as allowing " 'stoa" to boast that Manhattan was an all-"Fishbowl" town as far as they were concerned (as of 1972, all of the TDH-5303 class, in four different orders).

The only way these " 'stoa" "Dangerfields" ever penetrated Manhattan pre-1974 (when 4721-4727 were reassigned to Hudson depot) were via Bronx routes that terminated in upper Manhattan (such as the Bx29 that traveled to 125th Street).

W.B.:

As always, greatly appreciate the historical input, regarding the "Noo Yawk" buses of past decades.

I always thought it a bit odd (especially how "da Bronx" was decaying by the early 1970s) that the "Em-Tee-Yay" did not assign the remaining "Sherman's (including ex-"Tee-Yay") to Bronx routes for at least a few more years (a number of cities, in fact, DID retain at least some "Shermans" through the 1970s......Baltimore was one of these cities; the last of the old "indy" Old Looks in my area did not disappear until 1986!)

Two things still puzzle me about the "buses with the sign that sticks out in front"; IMHO, these workhorses were just well broken-in when the last left the streets in 1970.....they could have soldiered on for at least a few more years.

Too, that none of the old Jersey City "indy" outfits ever purchased at least of few of these distinctive and handsome buses is also a bit of a mystery, especially since "LAFAYETTE & GREENVILLE" did, in fact, purchase a few "Shermans" ("Tee-Yay") sometime around 1970.

I would have indeed been riding (and photographing) these buses on a regular basis, had they been sold for use in "Joisey"........
