By the time these photos (depicting MTA buses) were taken at the former BMT station at Rockaway Parkway (early 1970's/early 1980's) the old B&QT streetcars were but memories, gone for many a year.

Assorted subway rolling stock can also be viewed in the background.

Note that the old BRT-era line poles were then still intact, now serving as mountings for street lamps...........

Back in the days when the elderly "Standards" were still running on the Canarsie line (today's "L") the 105th St. grade crossing was indeed most evocative of the old SIRT, before grade crossing elimination.

The old BRT line poles were still keeping watch over the passing trains, as they had been for many decades.....

Two views of the long-forgotten Canarsie shuttle.

At one time, through service on this line was provide by BRT trains.

In 1920, through train service to the Canarsie pier ended; a loop was built at the Rockaway Parkway station, and streetcars shuttled between the BRT (later BMT) station and the Canarsie Pier until 1951, replaced by "B42" buses........

Longevity.......

The very oldest El cars in New York dated to the 1880's and 1890's, and were originally hauled by small "Forney" steam locomotives.

By 1902/1903, all the El lines (INTERBOROUGH and BRT) had been electrified.

The former steam-hauled cars were motorized, had electric heating and lighting installed; the IRT El cars all featured electric headlights; on the BRT, however, the only cars that had provisions for headlights were those which ran on routes that also utilized surface trackage.

These cars also used trolley poles when running on surface-level rails, often sharing the rails with streetcars.

New elevated cars built after 1900 were, of course, electrified from the start.

By the time the oldest of the BRT/BMT El cars were being retired in the late 1940's and early 1950's, many had been in daily service for over 60 years..........

The oldest of the BRT/BMT El cars (which dated back to the 1880's and 1890's) were easily identifiable by their center doors.

When new, these sliding doors (manually operated by trainmen) were used at Park Row and Sands Street, due to the heavy loadings at these stations; in later years, however, these doors were sealed, and seats were installed over the former doors.

A number of these elderly wooden cars lasted in regular service until the early 1950's........

Thoughts of B&QT's postwar (St.Louis) trolleybuses......

IMHO, it was, sadly, a waste of City money to purchase these modern, silent, zero-emission electric coaches.

Given the fact that these vehicles were little more than a decade old when they replaced by new diesel buses in 1960, and sold for scrap (none were sold for further service elsewhere, nor was a single example preserved) it seems foolish to ever have purchased them in the first place.

The existing B&QT trolleybus lines should have, simply, been converted to buses.

The money spent on the new St. Louis trolleybuses, given this, should have been used to purchase new diesel buses (GM's or MACKS)

Had the NYCTA retained Brooklyn's trolleybuses, it is reasonable to assume that these electric buses could have easily survived into the 1970's, at least, as trolleybuses of similar vintages were then still operating in other cities, including Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago.....

Photos showing the rear of the postwar B&QT trolleybuses are fairly rare.

This photo shows #3198 turning into Flatbush Avenue; note the narrow "gun slot" rear windows, which were quite similar to those used on prewar TWIN COACH buses..........

This October will mark the 67th year since the last B&QT PCC clattered over the rails in Brooklyn.

By 1956, only a few lines were still in operation; all service was then provided by a dwindling fleet of PCC's (the last of the double-ended 8000-series Peter Witts were then gone for several years)

Service to Manhattan (via the Brooklyn Bridge) had ended in 1950, six years earlier.

In 1956, the last streetcars ran in Brooklyn; the following year, the Dodgers moved out to LA.

The following year (1958) the last of the elderly convertible "BU" elevated gate cars on the Myrtle Avenue line were retired (replaced by the "Q" cars)

By 1956, the only "standard" streetcars remaining in Brooklyn were the work cars.

1956 was also the final year that "The Honeymooners" ran as a prime-time show...........

Here are several photos of PCC's operating on the "67" line; as mentioned in my previous post, it will be 67 years this October since the last B&QT streetcars ran.........

Unlike Newark, Boston, and Philadelphia, Brooklyn's PCC's never operated underground, with the exception running to the underground terminal at Delancey St., which closed in the late 1940's.

At this location, the only time you would see a PCC was when the cars were running on a fantrip; none of the lines serving the Delancey St. station utilized PCC's.

Thus, the only times that PCC's would stray from their regular routes was during the popular "Trolley Tour" fantrips, which had the cars operating on lines on which no PCC's ever operated in regular service......

Just thinking-------If Fiorello La Guardia not been so strongly biased against the Els-it is interesting to think of the old Brooklyn Els being upgraded to Contract Two status-enabling the old structures to carry steel subway trains-and connecting to either then-existing subway lines-or-perhaps connecting these lines to subway routes that did not go any further than the planning stage--------"NYO"
