I'm not sure, but I doubt it. Probably a bit at the outset . . .

I recall reading when NJT took delivery of their first artics (VOLVO) back the 80's, that schedules wer being adjusted on the routes where the new articulateds were being placed in service.

(This, of course, generally resulted in longer gaps between buses)........

On a bright, sunny day in 1974, we see MaBSTOA "Dangerfield" #4600 working the "Bx26", with the elevated IRT station looking in the background (West Farms)

Note the "Dangerfield" on the right (still wearing "Tee-Yay" green) heading in the opposite direction.

A Fishbowl can also just be glimpsed, in the far background.......

On another bright day back in '74, we see Fishbowl #6657 at Tremont and Arthur, up in "da Bronx".

The bus is still sporting its original (and stylish) MaBSTOA script over the windows......

4600 was the very first MaBSTOA "Dangerfield" - and I.I.N.M., initially assigned to West Farms depot / garage. The one in the background was from that same order.

This was a few months before 4721-4727 - among those initially put at Kingsbridge - were shifted to Hudson depot where, for the next several years, they were fixtures on such routes as M16.

And to think that, initially in late 1965, all 300 un-Batwinged Fishbowls (6401-6700) were assigned to "da Bronx" amongst all three depots in that borough (Coliseum, West Farms, Kingsbridge). It was a few years after that (c.1967-68 ), that a few of the batwings (6701-6900) were swapped for non-batwings, so that both here and Manhattan would have slices of both.

W.B.:

As always, appreciated the info. Wink

Given the fact that, "da Bronx" was already well in decline by the late 1960/s/early 1970's, it still somewhat puzzles me as to why NEW buses were assigned to Bronx-based routes.

As I have mentioned awhile back here, I could have easily seen the newest of the Old Looks lasting at least until the early 1970's on at least some MaBSTOA routes.

I can even see some MACKS still in service up in "da Bronx" by this late date; not too far-fetched a thought, really, when one remembers that "AVENUE B" was still operating MACKS in the mid-1970's......

Here's an interesting thought.....

On the IRT, you still had the 1948/1949-vintage R-12/14's in revenue service into the 1980's.

The very last of the "Thunderbird" R-10's were not retired until 1989, when they were in service for four decades.

Now, HAD the "Em-Tee-Yay" STILL be operating BUSES of the SAME vintage in 1989, we would have still been able to ride the venerable 4507's and 4510's, not to mention MACK C-45's.

Indeed, the City's bus fleet changed greatly over the decades, while a good chunk of the subway fleet (with some notable exceptions) remained virtually "status quo" for eons.....

By the time of this now-classic 1975 photo at Essex & Grand (note "Dangerfield" on the right), ex-"Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA Old Looks had already been gone for several years.

But, at least with "AVENUE B", a few second-hand Old Looks could still recall, at least for a brief while, the good old days when Old Looks dominated "Noo Yawk's" bustling streets......

One of my favorite "Old Look Twilight" photos (Broadway & Park Row, 1972)

By this late date, Old Looks were virtually extinct in the City; note, here, that #7075 (TDH-5106, 1957) has an empty front sign box (note bare bulbs)

The now-gone Twin Towers of the WTC can also just be glimpsed in the background............

These two wintry scenes depict a MaBSTOA Fishbowl and a "Dangerfield" hard at work on the "Bx29", back in '72..............

And the last year of the Citgo billboard across the river, atop that building on Bruckner Boulevard. The clock (12 x 17 in its numeral layout) dated back to 1962, the Citgo logo to 1965 (it had been known as Cities Service until then, and likewise had been up since '62). (In 1973, that would all be replaced by a Kent cigarettes billboard with accompanying zipper/time-temp display.)

That the new Flxies were assigned by MaBSTOA to "da Bronx" underscores why they have earned the "Dangerfield" nickname. (But then, the "Tee-Yay," in assigning their new A/C Flx units at the same time, likewise kept it generally confined to Brooklyn.) After all, Manhattan was now 100% 2nd generation Fishbowl as far as MaBSTOA went, and up to the 1973 order they worked to keep it that way. (TA's Manhattan fleet, in its age, was in-between MaBSTOA's and Avenue B's.)

I can only imagine that the purpose of those MaBSTOA "Dangerfields" in the Bronx was to allow for that borough's Old Looks to be retired. (If you've seen the pics of those discarded units at Coliseum in 1970.)

W.B.:

Your information, is, as always, informative and enlightning.

I believe these "discarded veterans" photos are the ones you were referring to.

The 1970's were dawning, but the era of MaBSTOA Old Looks was fast fading into history...... Sad
