I am thinking you are on the right track; the GARWOOD bus indeed looks like a front-engined coach; in 1936, GAR WOOD INDUSTRIES (Michigan) began building small buses with welded steel frames.
In "TRAILWAYS BUSES" (Luke) there is a left-hand view of a GARWOOD operated by "YANKEE TRAILWAYS"; there is a small door at the very rear of the body (most likely an emergency door)
The bus also had a rooftop luggage rack.
In 1939, GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION bought the bus-building operation, and continued to build buses for several years.......

More intercity/highway coaches with folding transit-type doors.....
In 1953, MASSACHUSETTS NORTHEASTERN TRANSPORTATION COMPANY purchased at least one Flxible "CLIPPER" equipped with a two-panel, air-operated, folding door.
Also worthy of note, several years earlier, MASS. NORTH EASTERN TRANSPORTATION COMPANY purchased a Flxible "SUBURBAN EXPRESS" bus, which was, basically a "CLIPPER" equipped with a "city transit style" four-panel air door.....

Is that Garwood front or rear engined?
It appears to me that it is front engined…more like a glorified step- van, than like the Clipper coach… |

Was lucky enough to come across the photo of the "YANKEE TRAILWAYS" Garwood that I had previously mentioned......

Here's a very rare 1950's photo of a GARWOOD in Winnipeg; look VERY closely in the background to spot the "GREYHOUND" sign......

Scroll down page (right-hand side) for some VERY rare interesting pictures of the highly-unorthodox GARWOOD bus (including some VERY interesting front and rear views)
Note one coach operated by "SAFEWAY TRAILWAYS", which, like some of the others, sports a VERY unorthodox front (also equipped with folding doors).......

The Gar Wood buses pictured were all rear engined buses. Most of the 170 buses built had Ford engines and they were models either “D” or “E”. Production was from 1937 to the fall of 1938.
Gar Wood was purchased be General American AeroCoach in August 1939 and continued making the Gar Wood as model EFI.
The introduction of the AeroCoach “Mastercraft” bus model in 1940 sealed the fate of the EFI Gar Wood.
The Mastercraft series style bus continued till 1952. |

MaBSTOA 15:
So....they WERE rear-engined buses, after all; like our good friend traildriver, I was almost positive that the "GAR WOOD" buses had front engines.
Thanks for the clarification!

For those who thought that the "GARWOOD" was a, shall we say, VERY unorthodox-looking bus, then take a gander at the highly-unorthodox "PEACEMAKER", perhaps one of the most BIZARRE motor coaches ever to hit the highways......no, I do NOT want to know just WHAT was being smoked when this mutant motor coach" was being designed.....(!!)

Regarding the the long-ago days when FACCo was beginning to phase out its famed double-decker fleet, I am wondering how headways/scheduling were adjusted, as now single-deck buses would soon be 100% of the fleet, buses which, of course, did not have the same passenger capacity as the older double-deckers.
Were headways increased, with the withdrawl of the higher-capacity double-deckers?
Just wondering.....
