Re: TRAILWAYS Areocoach w/silversides (seen in previous picture).....
The Model 372 AREOCOACH was one of the last to be built by the company.
These handsome buses seated 37 passengers, and had a choice of either gas or diesel engines.
"DE LUXE TRAILWAYS" (Chicago) purchased one of the last......

Though, as a general rule, we don't usually think of ACF-BRILL transit buses when discussing TRAILWAYS, a group of C-41 and C-44 transits (w/rear doors) were once operated by CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS, and operated in local service between Kansas City and the Johnson County suburban district in Kansas*.
These buses were powered by underfloor Hall-Scott gasoline engines.

Here's a timeless (circa-1970) scene of two EAGLES awaiting their next runs at the Worcester terminal, on a long-ago day......

Here we have a proud-looking TRAILWAYS ("Hi-liner") FLXIBLE; CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS used the moniker "CLIPPER EAGLE" for these handsome and distinctive buses......

The Flxible Hi-Level, or “Clipper Eagle” in Continental Trailways parlance, was the second generation of the Vista-Cruiser. The original Kassbohrer Eagle profile bears strong resemblance to it, on a larger scale. The later GM “buffalo’s” did likewise, as did the MCI MC-7, and the Prevost TS-47.
The Flxible’s used the same type of “Torsilastic” suspension as the Eagles.
The third and final generation was the Flxiliner, which ended production in the late sixties, along with the smaller Clipper line. After that, Flxible exited the highway coach business, and concentrated on transit bus production from its Twin Coach originated line. |

One company that remained loyal to Flxible until the very end, was Chicago’s Continental Air Transport. Their entire fleet consisted of Clippers and Flxiliners. They were forced to look elsewhere for new equipment and selected MC-5B’s for their line between the Chicago Loop hotels, and Midway and O’Hare Airports.
They had an interesting history, starting as Frank Parmalee livery, running horse-drawn coaches between Chicago’s six major railroad terminals. It later was motorized and became known as the Railroad Transfer Service. Passengers buying interline railroad tickets having to change stations were sold a coupon including that transfer, to avoid being fleeced by unscrupulous cab operators.
When they went after the newly developing air travel market, they sold the railroad operation to another old time Chicago charter service—Keeshin, who ran it right up to the Amtrak start, when all intercity trains were eventually consolidated to Union Station. |

As always, GREAT info....ALWAYS interesting!
In my collection, I have a LARGE hard plastic TRAILWAYS bus (over a foot long) that seems to be a curious BECK "Scenicruiser"/Flxible "Hi-Liner") hybrid.
My older brother brought it for me in "HOBBY MART" in the old "Port-Of-Authority", back in 1962, when we were in the city, on the way home to Union City, via NHBL!
It has a metal floor and streerable front wheels (hollow body)
I also have quite a number of tin litho two-axle "SCENICRUISERS", which were both available in GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS liveries.
There were a number of different versions of these; some of the GREYHOUND versions have a more realistic "SCENICRUISER" look, with the exception of only having one rear axle........

Was not familiar with any of this; thanks for sharing this great historical info here!
Flxible "AIRPORTERS", as you of course know, were very popular for many years; I can recall seeing a few running in Ottawa, back in 1973, during a family vacation to Canada (I DID snap off a few photos!)
The "AIRPORTER" went into production in 1946.
DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TOTALLY FORGOT (until just this minute) that there is a photo of a "CONTINENTAL AIR TRANSPORT" Airporter in "FLXIBLE INTERCTY BUSES (Luke)
Interestingly, the bus pictured had no destination sign.
Between 1951 and 1956 24 new "VISICOACHES" were added to the fleet.....
