Edgewater . . . Ah yes. Where some of the leased WMATA buses fell into the river, and the 'Tee-Yay' had to surrender some of their 1969-70 'Dangerfields' to DC when the lease time was up.

W.B.:

I had forgotten about that.

I remember seeing photos of this unfortunate incident in the papers, as well as on the news.

Just curious........it's so long ago, now........didn't the pier where the buses were stored collapse?

W.B.:

That's what I had thought.

After those drowned buses were raised from Davey Jones' locker, I would guess that they made their final trips to a scrapyard somewhere in the general area......

Curious.......

1:

In the period 1968-1970, approximately how many Old Looks were then still on the active "Tee-Yay" roster? (was this a hodgepodge of "Tee-Yay" and MaBSTOA rolling stock?)

2:

What routes passing through Times Square still were using Old Looks?

3:

When did the last MACKS run in Manhattan? (I'm guessing that the remaining buses were only running in Staten Island, by that time)

Appreciate info.....

Let me see . . .
1) Post-1953, for sure, all 40-footers. Whatever remaining 35-footers there were had been retired once the A/C Fishbowls arrived. (Including the original #2969, the real Jackie Gleason bus.)
2) Apparently none. Whatever Old Looks still in Manhattan ran along Fifth Avenue generally, though some held down the #11 route along Ninth/Columbus and Tenth/Amsterdam Avenues. They were generally concentrated at 132d Street depot.
3) If MaBSTOA, 1967. Early to mid-1970's if Avenue B & East Broadway.

W.B,:

Appreciate the info, as always.

Indeed, the "old order" was rapidly changing at that time, dwindling down to a few precious fleet members, stalwart workhorses of another era.

I STILL lament that NOT ONE of the distinctive "buses with the sign that sticks out in the front" was preseved; I LOVED those buses!

I have a circa-1963 postcard in my collection (Mom bought it for me at the St. George terminal) showing an overhead view of the terminal; long lines of vehicles are seen waiting to board the SI and 69th St. boats.

It looked to have been taken during a rush hour, as many buses are at the platforms; ALL Old Looks and MACKS*, with nary a Fishbowl in sight.

This is just how I remember the St. George terminal, as a young lad, some 60-odd years ago (the SI Ferry STILL had an all-"steamer" fleet, way back then!) Wink

*In fact, my FIRST SI bus ride (circa '62) was on a MACK with Mom, riding out to South Beach (she recalled riding SIRT';s ME-1's) out to South Beach with her family, mid/late 1920's, early 1930's; we always rode them all the way down to Tottenville) Very Happy

Another quick question:

When did the first "large scale" influx of Fishbowls in Staten Island take place? (I'm guessing later 1960's)

Also, when were the first "Dangerfields" sent to SI?

As to the first query: There were already a handful Fishbowls in the so-called "Forgotten Borough" as of 1966, all from the 1963 order. The deluge would have begun later in the decade for sure. Starting in 1968-69 with a portion of the second "Tee-Yay" A/C Fishbowl order, the first under "Em-Tee-Yay" aegis.

Second query: Definitely between 1970 and 1972, from within the 1964-65 order. (Why none of that bunch could have been reassigned to Manhattan, side-by-side near the 1964-65 Fishbowls when passing through 50th or 65th Street, neither you nor I know.)

W.B.:

Again, appreciate your taking the time to post this information.

I know that, by the later 60's (nearing 1970), I can remember seeing mostly non-Old Look buses at St. George.

By the time i started exploring SI on my own (mid-70's), the Old Looks and MACKS, certainly, were already history.

I do recall both Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" at St. George then, some still in "Tee-Yay" green, with others sporting the new two-tone blue.

There is a late 1960's photo in Theodore W. Scull's excellent "THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY", showing an aerial view of the St. George terminal, obviously between rush hours.

Docked at the terminal are boats of the "MISS NEW YORK", "MERRELL", and "KENNEDY" classes; an NYFD fireboat can also be seen, docked in one of the abandoned 69th St. slips.

Several buses are seen laying over on "the loop"; at least one or two were Old Looks.......

It's all so long ago, now.......

Also of interest......

In my copy of "THE GODFATHER COMPANION" (Harlan Lebo) there is a 1971 photo showing the scene (set in 1955) where a mob "rubout" takes place on the steps of City Hall.

In the background, beyond the roped-off "set", a "Tee-Yay" green Fishbowl (still carrying the script over the windows) is clearly scene.

Also, I'd like to mention that, in the early scenes of "BACKDRAFT" (the opening is set in 1971 Chicago) there are two quick glimpses of CTA "Dangerfields" wearing the 1960's-era CTA green..........

Definitely the Macks were gone from SI by 1969 . . . the 9000 Old Looks by 1972. Any way you slice it, truly the end of an era.

W.B.:

The last I can remember riding on a Staten Island MACK would have been around 1967.

As I had mentioned earlier, as a little guy, in the early/mid-60's, I only recall Old Looks and MACKS at St. George.

Yes, indeed, by the early 70's, an era had indeed ended.

Today, in 2023, even the Fishbowls, "Dangerfields", and the RTS are now have all passed on into history......

Staten Island garages.......

How many are/were located on Staten Island?

Are these all new "Em-Tee-Ay" facilities, or, are there any "holdovers" from the "Tee-Yay" era?
