Back in 1972, we see "AVENUE B" Fishbowl #620 carrying a small rear ad frame (w/ad card).......

Those pics were from the last months of the 12th Street depot (where those buses were housed) before the Hudson depot on Pier 57 opened in the fall (and the buses were transferred thereto). From what I read, 12th Street was a de facto sardine can amongst the ex-NYCO depots/garages, with buses that couldn't fit inside parked on the curb. |

Here's an interesting view (1973) of MaBSTOA Fishbowl #8658.
Note that the bus is carrying only one small ad card; the large offside frame is empty, as is the frame on the dash.
Note, also, the batwing is also barren.......

Same location, same year, different (MaBSTOA) bus.
Amazing the difference a full set of ads (including batwings) makes....

And amazingly, the same Kent billboard. |

W.B.:
Yup, way back in '73, cigarette ads were simply part of the everyday scene.
Think of the many cigarette ads carried by buses (inside and out) over the course of many decades, not to mention the cigarette ads once found inside every rapid transit and commuter coach (not to mention the ferryboat cabins)......

Speaking of cigarette ads, check out this now-nostalgic view snapped at Willets & 148th St., back in 1973.
Note the ancient, batted-scarred "work motor" up above on the El; if you look VERY closely in the background, you can just glimpse the roofline of an R-12/14.......

*I like this sign; the 125th St. Ferry to Edgewater shut down in late 1950, and the HUDSON RIVER DAY LINE abandoned service to the 125th St. pier in the 1960's..... |

Gun Hill Road (1973), and another MaBSTOA bus carrying a KENT ad; note the train of "museum" Lo-V's up on the El (this was, of course, also the same year that the Bronx 3rd Avenue El was abandoned)......

From c.1974 to 1978, Kent advertised across the river over Bruckner Boulevard in 'da Bronx', seen not only by people boarding southbound M15's at the uppermost tip of Second Avenue at 126th Street but also those passing by along the FDR/Harlem River Drive, Willis Avenue Bridge, Triborough Bridge and Circle Line:

Coincidentally (or not), that front roll sign dated to the 1960's. Day Line must've abandoned that service after 1966 or so. |

W.B.:
According to Donald Ringwald's excellent work, "HUDSON RIVER DAY LINE", The DAY LINE abandoned service to W. 125th St. (and Yonkers) after the close of the 1964 season.
The proud old steamboat company was taken over by CIRCLE LINE in 1962......
