Battery technology is advancing more rapidly then other forms of energy storage. Personally, I would feel safer riding with lithium batteries than compressed natural gas or propane, as far as fire danger goes.
Intercity buses could be recharged at rest and station stops, and new technology will provide “on the fly” contactless inductive charging on selective roadways.
Sort of harkens back to the days when The Broadway Limited and rival Twentieth Century Limited dipped their steam locomotive scoops into track pans to fill their tenders with water at speed.😎 |

As far as self-driving buses go, I agree that there should always be a driver on board, to monitor. Both for taking control if necessary, as well as to attend to passengers.
Just as airliners do even though capable of auto pilot. We |

All good (and interesting!) points, as always!
You mentioned CNG; recall the CNG-powered RTS's operated by COMMAND and TRIBORO, years ago?
Though I thought they were quite interesting, I never wanted to ride one (I was always leery of an explosion)
Recall, on the other hand, the huge fleet (nearly 1,000 strong) of the postwar propane-powered TWIN COACHES rostered by CTA.
You mentioned the "water pans" for steam locomotives to take on water ""on the fly"; these were also used in Great Britain, during the steam era (last steamers ran in 1968)
The DL&W, ERIE, and CNJ all once used water pans, way back in the day.
Storage battery-powered transit vehicles are, of course, nothing new.
Over 100 years ago, battery-powered streetcars were operating in New York and other cities; in London, battery-powered buses were already operating (for a time), prior to 1910

From "BUSES, TROLLEYS, & TRAMS (Chas. A. Dunbar, 1967)......
"......the GENERAL standardized on petrol, but, early on, there were also experiments with buses using petrol engines to generate electricity as the motive power....."
".......battery-electrics were also seen on London streets for a time....."
"......steam buses appeared in 1907, when the METROPOLITAN STEAM OMNIBUS Co. Ltd began operations. GENERAL absorbed the company in 1912......"
".......NATIONAL operated CLarkson-built steam-buses from 1909 until 1919; their fleet eventually numbered 184....."

The Proterra is built here in Greenville, SC. I see them road tested on a regular basis. I also drive by the plant and see finished buses and unfinished shells. |

This is interesting.
I wonder now if NJT is considering any Proterra buses?
I'm pretty certain that SEPTA has them (or had them)......

I know you now reside in Florida; indeed hope and pray that you and the family are all OK.
I would imagine that ACADEMY has suspended operations in Florida?

NYO--
We just had a lot of rain and wind in our area. The Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach terminals did fine. Some of our operations were canceled by the clients yesterday, but we were fully up and running today. Not sure how our Tampa and Orlando terminals fared in this.
Thanks for asking.... |
