.......IF "GREENVILLE" was the only purchaser of second-hand "Tee-Yay" buses, it seems odd that this company was the only one, out of the several other independent companies then operating in the Jersey City area.

Of course, in later years, recall the many GRUMMANS (aka "Borough Bombers") that found their way to New Jersey, after being retired by the MTA....

.....it would also be interesting to know how many ex-MTA GRIMMANS ("Boro Bombers") went to other "Joisey" operators, besides NJT.

I know I rode on ex-MTA "Bombers" a number of times, long, long ago.

Appreciate info.....

Though I've mentioned this elswhere awhile on our discussions long ago, I DO clearly remember ex-MTA RTS equipment running on ACADEMY's "22 HILLSIDE" (MTA stickers could still be found affixed to the seating that was to be given up to the elderly, etc.)

I rode these buses too many times to count, back in the day......

Academy seems to like buying bargain “hand-me-downs” for contracted transit operations.
Here in West Palm Beach, I drive equipment they acquired that formerly were used by Barrie (Ontario) Transit, as well as Mississauga (also Ontario) Transit, in addition to buses formerly operated for Tri-Rail (South Florida Regional Transportation Authority).

traildriver:

Thanks for this info; I used to ride ACADEMY Metros/GRUMMANS(?) on both the #22 and the "Boulevard East" (rush hour only) lines for years.

Back in the 40's, 50's, and through the 60's, PS operated the #22......

Here's an ACADEMY 3200 series departing Hoboken, back in the 90's; I rode these daily for years on the rush-hour "BOULEVARD EAST" run.

The 3200's had upholstered, high-back seats, QUITE a bit more comfortable than those buses with hard plastic seating! Shocked

The ACADEMY drivers I knew back then used to call the 3200's "limousines"...... Wink

Earlier, I mentioned several ex- "Tee-Yay" Old Looks being sold to Jersey City's "LAFAYETTE & GREENVILLE".

I wonder what enticed the "Tee-Yay" to SELL these buses for further service elsewhere, instead of sending them to the torch, as is the norm..........

Speaking of second-hand buses from "big outfits" many ex-PS buses, especially Old Looks, went on to serve other operators.

Into the 1980's, a few ex- PSNJ Old Look transits (still adorned in the 1960's two-tone green) were still running on the now-gone WASHINGTON STREET line in Hoboken.

I knew these old buses quite well, way back when......

Many years ago, our good, always-knowledgeable friend Mr. Linsky (he is still greatly missed) informed me that this "WASHINGTON STREET" bus* had been purchased second-hand from a "Noo Yawk" operator (I rode this bus a number of times, in my younger days).......

Back in 1972, we see an ex-PSNJ Old Look at the Hoboken Terminal, still wearing its 1960's two-tone green PS livery.

As I had mentioned earlier, a few of these old workhorses ran in Hoboken into the 1980's.

Growing up in Union City, I well remember these familiar old buses on the (PS) #16 and #17, which ran on Summit avenue, just up the block from our old apartment building......

For comparison, here are two circa-1955 photos of PS buses at Hoboken, taken on a gloomy rainy day.

These pictures were snapped just steps east of the 1972 photo of the ex-PS Washington Street bus.

At that time, the DL&W was still operating steam ferries to Manhattan 9service to Barclay Street ended in November, 1967) as well as extensive network of electric and diesel commuter trains; also, a number of through trains.

These nostalgic scenes were much the same when You's Truly was growing up; this Terminal, then still quite a bustling facility, was like a second home to me.......

While on the subject of second-hand "Noo Yawk" buses in "Joisey", mention must be made of the distinctive ex-"YONKERS TRANSIT" "New Look" MACKS that, by the 1970's, were running for "BLUE & WHITE".....

I think it's time to revive not only this thread, but the entire section of which this is part. Here is a 1968 photo of the back side of #3215 (ex FACL #5) after being reworked and transferred to the 'Tee-Yay's' Ulmer Park depot in Brooklyn. I recall that type of grille as seen on the A/C cover atop the back of the bus, on suburban Inter City Lines buses parked near where I lived for 11 years, and different from what the A/C Fishbowls for both them and MaBSTOA had. Oh, and the rear windows, as you could see, are 3-piece.

W.B.:

EXCELLENT photo....thanks for posting.

How we took such great buses for granted, back in the day.

You brought up a VERY good item; the a/c grills.

Here again, here is another aspect of the bus hobby, so long ago, that is now totally extinct.

Who, except the most die-hard "nuts-and-bolts" bus enthusiast, back in the day, would even think to notice the differences in a/c grillwork.

How well I remember seeing (and riding) the ex- INTER CITY Fishbowls in the early NJT era.

When I was growing up, INTER-CITY's long-defunct #97 ran right by our old apartment house; the buses then used were quite an interesting mix of Old Looks, ACF-BRILLS, and two WHITE models.

Cannot believe this was all well over 50 years ago......
