W.B.:
Appreciate this info; here again, with today's robotic caterpillars, Dustbusters, and milk cartons, their electronic signage has made "recycled rollsigns" (and all rollsigns, for that matter) long, long obsolete, as obsolete as subway and bus tokens.......
I'll take the tried-and-true rollsigns anyday......

W. B. Fishbowl... wrote in an earlier post in this thread...
"If any Old Look survived past 1973, I shudder to think about how the two-tone blue scheme would have been incorporated - lighter on the top, darker on the bottom?"
Here is a photo of the only old look GM to be painted in the two-tone blue scheme (albeit it is from Nassau County).
If any NYCTA and/or MaBSTOA old look survived this is the scheme minus the orange trim.
In my personal opinion... UGLY! In fact, I never did care for the two-tone scheme or any other scheme besides the original green and the 2 tone green/aqua scheme applied to the ex-FACCo and ex-Surface when they became MaBSTOA in 1962.
slide from EBay and used here for educational purposes

An EXCELLENT photo; thanks for sharing with us!
Perhaps I am in the minority, here, but I find this paint scheme attractive; perhaps it is because it reminds Your's Truly of the colorful fleets once operated by the Hudson County "indies" of my long-ago youth.
Too, it STILL beats out NJT's "shoebox white with a schmear" that I have long hated.......

PS:
(This is the ONLY photo I have seen of an Old Look wearing the new MTA insignia....I was never a fan of this, either)

A mystery bus... this i n ex-Bee Line, Nassau County GM TDH-5106, an identical twin to the the one in two-tone blue that I posted a few minutes ago...
This one is undergoing restoration, it appears to be in the NYCTA garage - note the three buses to the right
Details??

MaBSTOA 15:
OUTSTANDING photos!
That London "GENERAL" bus would have been undergoing the "tilt test" at the massive Chiswick Works (now demolished), which was also used by London Transport for decades.
This bus was an "ST"-type, which entered service with the GENERAL in 1930.
Some were later rebuilt with "square cabs".
Many of these big buses ran until after WW2...........

London and FACCo.......
"......all through the earlier years, FACCo not only copied the London-type buses, but even hired Colonel George A. Green of the London Transportation Company. Ltd, to run them......"
".......he was hired as General Manager in 1910, and held the job until 1923. He then went to work for Yellow Coach......."

........as I had mentioned previously in this topic, FACCo was indeed far more advanced that London's "GENERAL", regarding destination signs.
Whereas FACCo buses were using roller sign boxes prior to WW1, such signs were not introduced on London's double-decker fleet until the very late 1920's.
Wooden sign boards, in fact, were even used in conjunction with roller signs ("blinds" in British terms) in London, into the 1940's......

Though, of course, the FACCo "open-toppers" were quite popular with daily riders and tourists alike on sunny days, I am sure they were anything BUT in rainy/snowy weather.
In this one respect, London's "GENERAL" was ahead of FACCo; virtually all of their thousands of open-top buses had their upper decks enclosed by the early 1930's.
These buses (and the few open-toppers that had not been rebuilt) were all retired by circa-1935.......

In London (and, also, in Baltimore) retired double-deckers were often used as "tree loppers" (London terminology); the windows were boarded up and workmen stood on the now-seatless upper deck, trimming branches of trees that were located on streets where the double-deckers ran.
Given the fact that FACCO double-deckers did not run on tree-lined streets, such a novel adaptation of a retired FACCo open-topper would have been quite redindant......

Here's a photo of a vintage "tree-lopper" from Great Britain; some of the earliest conversions utilized GENERAL "B"-type buses......

Mentioning "tree-loppers" made me think of how the FACCo double-deckers had no worries about overhanging traffic signals (as are the norm today), as, back in the FACCo, the traffic lights were "pedestal" types, and did not overhang the roadways.....

"Pedestal" traffic lights were, of course, not limited to 5th Avenue, but were once commonplace throughout the city.
In this 1972 view, it is obvious that this particular traffic signal has had a more modern "head" mounted on a vintage pedestal, replacing the original......
