I would if I were a subscriber. Sadly, it's behind a paywall.

Roller curtains/electronic signage.....

I always thought it odd that while the last "Em-Tee-Ay" buses to have roller curtains (as delivered) were final orders of Fishbowls and "Dangerfields"; under ground, however, the R-68 "Hippos" of the late 1980's came equipped with roller curtains, the very last new "Noo Yawk" subway cars to be equipped with roller curtains, as delivered.

Given this (also, recall the R-62's originally having roller signs) I wonder why the "Em-Tee-Yay" did not go with roller curtains for the "Borough Bombers" and the RTS...........

The concept of "automatic" signage inside of rapid transit cars is, by no means, a new one.

As early as 1910, the H&M (today's PATH) was experimenting with chain-driven "station indicator" signs in the cars; this experiment was not repeated.

On the BMT, the "Multi-Section" cars of the later 1930's had similar interior station indication signs, also operated by a chain drive......

Here's the interior of a BMT "Multi"; the small station indicator sign can be seen just above the gangway leading into the next unit......

At least the left-hand section of the roller sign box on retired Old Look (MaBSTOA) #3227 is indeed easily readable, and not relegated to a mere "slot".......
