Quick question:

When SURFACE buses terminated their uptown runs at Yankee Stadium, what reading was displayed on the rollsigns?

Was "YANKEE STADIUM" used?

Thanks in advance for info....

I just came across a really interesting old photo showing open-topped FACCo double-decker #1215 in the center of the GWB, heading for New Jersey (clearly a posed shot); while doing a "pinterest" search.

Bus is signed for the "#1"; a young lady (an actress?) is behind the wheel, wearing a corsage.

A lot of well-dressed folks are on the upper deck; looks like it was a cold day!

An ad on the side of the upper deck can be seen: "HOLLYWOOD-HERE WE COME".

Photo looks to have been taken in the mid-40's or thereabouts.

Unfortunately, I could not get the "tumblr" link to work. Sad

I'm guessing that MAYBE this bus was on its way to being shipped to Hollywood, to be used in films.......

.......sobering to think that, way back when the 2000 Subway Series was played, RTS buses and the iconic "Redbird" subway cars were still in service; the humble RTS indeed remained in service far longer than the legendary "Redbirds", the last of which being retired in late 2003.

A lot of water has indeed gone under the proverbial bridge, since then, for both the "Em-Tee-Yay" and the local teams......

It does seem a tad frightening that the RTS outlasted both Yankee Stadium I (b) and Shea Stadium, doesn't it? Never mind the Redbirds . . .

W.B.:

Agreed 100%.

Why "The House That Ruth Built" had to first suffered "modernization", and then, wanton destruction (to be replaced with a modern-era, sanitized lookalike) is beyond me)

BUT, at least it LOOKS somewhat like the old Yankee Stadium, and the old name still refers to the current ballpark.

Over in Queens, not only did Mets faithful have to suffer a tremendous loss seeing the hallowed stomping grounds of the "Amazin' Mets", Shea Stadium, destroyed (and the soaring (if crumbling) Collesium in Rome still stands after 2,000 years), but, also, have the replacement stadium named "CitiField", not even honoring the fabled Shea in name. Sad

In both the cases involving the old Yankee Stadium and Shea, well enough should have been left alone......as well as some respect for history being shown........ Sad

"Field of Dreams"........

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee_Stadium*

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shea_Stadium **

*The "I Love Lucy" episode, "Lucy and Bob Hope", took place at Yankee Stadium, and featured a few quick "live" shots of the exterior.

William Frawley (the ever-parsimonious Fred Mertz on "Lucy") was a HUGE baseball fan, and was on a first-name basis with many of the "names", specially those playing for "The Bombers".

He was also involved in a number of short subjects and other films on baseball, way, way back in the day.

**A number of the older "Everybody Loves Raymond" episodes featured exterior shots of Shea (recall, Ray was a sportswriter, and he and brother Robert often talked about going to see the Mets when they were kids, and, after going to bed, staying up for hours, talking about the Amazins').......

Recall, also, the fabled Brooklyn Dodgers were originally known as the "Trolley Dodgers", as downtown Brooklyn was then a massive conglomeration of intersecting trolley lines......

As to the last pic, a shame there aren't really any pics of that Dime clock in closeup from when it was actually functioning.

W.B.:

In my town, from the mid-70's until about the early 1990's, one of the banks had an unusual clock/thermometer that revolved atop a steel frame, which also held illuminated signs for the bank and adjacent stores.

One side of this revolving illuminated "square" had a clock face, while other had a thermometer.

It remained OOS for some time before being finally removed.

Another bank had the classic "mini bulb" thermometer over the main entrance, projecting over the sidewalk.

This, also, has been gone for many years.....
