In the twilight days of its long career on the streets of Da Bronx and Mahattan, this scruffy-looking ex-SURFACE Old Look (4507?) is still "on the job".....for now......

Another post-1960 due to the ad racks on the side which explains why the Surface lettering is in a concentrated area as opposed to spread out under the passenger windows. Not to mention one of the old NYCO or FACCo buses from post-1949-50 that John E. McCarthy had replace the worst of the worst Surface rolling stock after his FACL taking over ST at the end of '56 (in short, it wasn't just the 1963 replacements that saw the most dilapidated of Surface livery see the crusher).
As for that #1578 bus, there was a whole bit where, when the 1963 order for MaBSTOA buses was drawn up, a certain group of the new Fishbowls on the block were assigned to 132nd Street whereas the best-kept Old Looks of that depot were transferred to 'da Bronx' to replace the beyond-repair Surface buses (including that and the #1310 bus that Surface driver William Cimillo infamously commandeered to Florida back in '47) that were kept together with string and duct tape. |

As always, appreciate your "in depth" historical info.
Speaking of scruffy old buses with "lettering in a concentrated area", here's an early 60's photo (which we've already seen previously in several discussions) of FACCo's #1700........

1578 is no longer working for Surface Transit but rather MaBSTOA!
Note the logo between the ad racks.
Also, note the front door opens outward rather than the standard inward opening!

As always, appreciate the additional info; yes, by the time that picture of a battered #1578 was snapped, MaBSTOA was know "running the show".
Most certainly, even though such buses looked sleek and modern when knew in the 1940's, they indeed looked quite dated by the time that the first Fishbowls began arriving.......

I know what you mean, but . . . although the Old Looks were tough as you-know-what, Surface with their particular practices took everything to a particular extreme that was almost self-parodic. (It was noted that NYCO's maintenance practices were somewhere in-between the immaculate care of FACCo's fleet and the letting-it-all-go Surface's.) |

Good point.
Some companies managed to keep their fleets in pretty decent shape, despite the wear and tear of advancing years, while others, it seemed, simply "did not give a *%#@" ('nuff said)....

Here's another one of those "Gee, it ain't gonna be long until the last Old Looks are gone" photos.
In 1972, we see "Tee-Yay" #7075 (a 1957 TDH-5106) awaiting the next run uptown.
Though in still decent-enough shape, note that the roller sign box is empty (you can just make out a cardboard sign in the right-hand windshield.
When this early-1970's photo was taken, the 7000-series had then been in service for 15-odd years......
