The sad end for a historic NYCRR tug that ALMOST made it into the present; how ironic that she was scrapped at Tottenville, where, until late 1963, SIRT trains connected with the SUNRISE FERRIS to Perth Amboy.......

A stalwart, historic reminder of the long-ago days of carfloat yards in Manhattan......

Here's a most interesting page (w/photos) on the PRR's former Greenville float yards in Jersey City; there is much good reading here......

........remembering the NYCRR tugs......

These hard-working, classic-era tugs had the distinction of being the last railroad-owned steam tugs on the Hudson River, when the P-C merger took place in 1968.

The ERIE, DL&W, and the CNJ had dieselized their tug fleets by the 1950's.

(Recall, also, the NYCRR tug carrying Barbra Streisand across the harbor in "Funny Girl"!) Very Happy

A number of these truly handsome vessels were condemned to die a slow and painful death on the dreary mud flats of the infamous WITTE's on Staten Island; for decades, these decayed, rotting wrecks were still easy to identify, and often, they'd be leaning against each other, as though they were seeking mutual comfort amid their dismal surroundings. Crying or Very sad

How quickly yesterday's commonplace becomes today's rarity.......

"Rust In Pieces"....... Crying or Very sad

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staten_Island_boat_graveyard *

(truly sad to think of just how much maritime history was simply left to rot away here, for so many years).......

*Note the outstanding 1973 photo of the ex-EL ferryboat "POCONO" (here, still looking in pretty decent shape); look closely amid the conglomeration of wrecks, and you'll spot one of ex-Staten Island "DONGAN HILLS" boats, which were retired in 1965, with the arrival of the "KENNEDY" Class diesels.

...........for many decades, WITTES's was home to a spectacular (if derelict) collection of historic vessels that no maritime museum could even dream of.

In addition to the usual NY Harbor craft (ferryboats, tugs, carfloats, etc.), there were also a number of ex-military craft here, also, small tankers, and excursion boats (the historic New England "NEW BEDFORD" was one of the latter.

Several ex-EL ferries once languished here; the "ELMIRA", the "POCONO", and the "LACKAWANNA".

The steam-driven ferryboats of the old Newburgh-Beacon crossing, displaced by the new bridge in late 1963, also once sat here on the murky mudflats for eons, silently decaying and rotting away.......

.....on this day in 1957, the very last steam-hauled PRR passenger train (NY&LB) ran between Exchange Place (Jersey City) and Bay Head Jct.

The legendary K-4's had the distinction of not only being the last passenger-hauling steam locomotives to operate in revenue service, but also, the last steam locomotives to serve a Hudson River waterfront depot.......

With the exception of the historic Lackawanna Terminal at Hoboken, and the 1889-headhouse of the former CNJ terminal in Jersey City, it is impossible to mark the locations of any of the former rail/ferry terminals that were once located on the New Jersey side of the Hudson.

In Weehawken, the site of the old NYCRR West Shore terminal (closed 1959, burned 1962) is now a massive parking lot for the Waterway Ferry terminal.

The only semblence of rail in the area is the HBLR, whose trains, unlike those of the NYCRR, do not directly connect with the present-day ferries.

The sprawling freight yards, last used by the PC, prior to Conrail, has been totally obliterated; a conglomeration of new high-rise buildings, condos, and access roads now dominate the area.

The ramshackle ERIE terminal at Pavonia Avenue (closed late 1950's) was demolished about 1960, and the former ferry terminal site, as well as the old yards, have vanished, replaced with the many insipid buildings and towers of Newport.

Though the 1889-headhouse of the former CNJ terminal in Jersey City (now situated in what is now Liberty Park) still stands with its decaying Bush trainsheds, all traces of the once-sprawling passenger and freight yards have vanished.

The two-level 1914 CNJ ferry terminal building (along with the inclined ramps and passageways that connected it to the main station building) was to be restored, but, sadly, was instead torn down in 1983.

The Liberty Science Center (which I have long since dubbed as the "Communipaw Tombstone" today sits on the site of the CNJ's bustling Communipaw Engine Terminal (closed 1973), with its two roundhouses and complex coaling and servicing facilities.

Again, not a trace remains of this huge and once-busy engine facility.

Likewise, the LV's float yards, float bridges, and piers have also disappeared, at the old Morris Canal Basin.

At Exchange Place, all traces of the PRR terminal (which closed 1961), ferry slips, and elevated approach trestles are but memories, with nothing remaining.

So much valuable transportation history has vanished with little or no trace for future generations to explore.....

On this day in 1967, the last regular weekday operations on the CNJ (Jersey Central) to Jersey City ended.

The Aldene Plan would be re-routing all CNJ passenger trains into Penn Station, Newark, using tracks of both the LV and PRR.

This was also the last day that the CNJ's steam-powered ferryboat "ELIZABETH" made her final run; the next day, all ferry service to Liberty St. would end forever, using the leased ex-69th St. boasts, "THE TIDES" and "THE NARROWS".

Neither of the latter two boats were ever popular with commuters.

Also, the CNJ abandons all service on the Newark Branch to Broad St., Newark, as well as rush hour service between Kearny (western Electric/Federal Shipyards) and Plainfield.

The RDG trains (Philadelphia-Jersey City) "THE CRUSADER" and the "WALL STREET" are also re-routed to Penn Station, Newark, now running with all RDC consists.

The busy, multi-platform station complex at Elizabethport also closes its waiting room and becomes a glorified "flag stop", now only serving the Bayonne-Cranford "Scoot" shuttle, which itself was abandoned in 1978.

All platforms, save for one, or also closed at this time......

On this date in 1967, with the start of the Aldene Plan, the West Side Avenue grade crossing (west of Journal Square) is closed.

Manned by gatemen, H&M/PATH "joint service" trains and electrified PRR trains passed through this crossing.

At the same time, Newark-Hudson Terminal rush-hour expresses were abolished, as were eastbound Journal Square "short turns".

Tokens replaced railroad-style tickets, and turnstiles were erected at Newark and at Journal Square (Newark platform entrances)

New color light signals replaced the PRR position lights on the Newark line, and new "PA-2" cars replaced the "K" cars in Newark service......

On this date in 1966, the Erie-Lackawanna implemented its largest "train off" in its history.

Commuter service was totally abolished on several ex-ERIE/DL&W lines, including:

SUSSEX BRANCH

CALDWELL BRANCH

GREENWOOD LAKE

CARLTON HILL SPUR

NORTHERN BRANCH

Commuter service was also discontinued between Netcong and Washington, NJ.

The electrified Montclair Branch was cut back to running only during the rush hours; South Orange ceased to function as a terminal, and became a "through" station only.

The adjacent MU yard and tower were abandoned, and have long since vanished.

Service was also cut back on the surviving M&E electric lines.

There was no diesel-hauled varnish on Sundays.

Also, the axe would soon fall on the fabled "PHOEBE SNOW" (Hoboken-Chicago), as well as her DELAWARE DIVISION connections, Trains #'s 21 and 22 (Hoboken-Binghamton)

With the abandonment of the latter two trains (which Your's Truly remembers well) the DELAWARE DIVISION was now devoid of passenger service.

The following year, (November, 1967) the E-L would abandon all ferry service between Hoboken and Barclay St.

Four of the five remaining boats were still coal-fired (the 1891 "LACKAWANNA" had been dieselized in 1949)

None of the boats survive today (the "BINGHAMTON",long a local landmark at Edgewater, NJ, was severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy, and eventually was scrapped on the spot; the site of the old Barclay St. terminal in lower Manhattan long ago ceased to exist.

So much has since vanished.

How very fortunate I was, that Mom took me for so many excursions out of Hoboken, when I was just a lad!

It should also be noted that in 1968, the last RPO's operated on the E-L.

Thereafter, until the demise of the last E-L through train, "THE LAKE CITIES", the only mail that would be carried would be of the sealed pouch variety.

The final two "express" trains, the "NEW YORK MAIL" and "THE OWL"(both Hoboken-Buffalo overnight trains) made their final runs in 1969.

TOFC flats (USPS and REA) were also carried.

Both trains were also equipped with a coach or two; until about 1965, a diner was also carried on these trains.

These two trains were also the last to connect Hoboken and Buffalo........
