Here, for comparison, are two "head on" views showing a Fishbowl and a "Dangerfield", taken back in 1972.

Though both buses indeed have a much "beefier" appearance than today's milk cartons and caterpillars, the "Dangefield" clearly has a "huskier" look than the GM-built bus.

Recall, in earlier years, the more "hefty"-looking MACKS......

Here's an interesting page on the "Dangerfield"*.......

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flxible_New_Look_bus

(note, also, photo of the (thankfully!) preserved "Dangerfield" in "Tee-Yay" green)

*The section on Flxible's competition with GM is also interesting.....

In this long-ago, nostalgic "once upon a yesterday" scene, we see "Dangerfield" #7326 trailed by a CAREY 4104.......a great deal of water has gone under the proverbial bridge since then.....

Proving that Hudson Depot on Pier 57 got that plus the other 61 Flxies (7300-7361) in that order; M16 was among the routes assigned there. The small 'M' was no doubt part of the set of roll signs printed that month (April) in anticipation of the July change in many route numbers in Manhattan and the Bronx (but not the pull-in, pull-out M10 Broadway that afterwards would remain M10 Broadway and still run through 1976). Also this was a few months before 4721-4727 of the 1969-70 order was shifted to Hudson to join the new Dangerfields on the block. Wonder if that assignation of these new buses was in a way to make up for none of the prior orders having assignations directly in Manhattan?

W.B.:

As always, find your historical "input" always interesting.

A couple of quick questions:

1:

What "Dangerfields" were the last delivered to the "Em-Tee-Yay", and what depot(s) were they assigned to?

2:

When were the last "Dangerfields" retired?

3:

When the "Dangerfields" began arriving on "Tee-Yay" property in the 60's (also, the new Fishbowls) how was it determined what type went to what garage?

I would guess they were being allocated to garages with the oldest buses; thanks in advance for input.....

1) depends on which type bus. If the "New Look" type, then "Tee-Yay's" 9000-9159 and MaBSTOA 9160-9319 from 1977 were the last; if you count the misbegotten 1980 Grumman lot, then those would be it. I remember a few of the '77 lot ran on the M101 and M102, ergo assigned out of 100th Street (OHS).
2) 1993 - two years before the Blitz-rebuilt Fishbowls.

As of 1980-81, the following depots housed the 1977 order thus:

- 9000-9021 - East New York
- 9022-9042 - Crosstown
- 9043-9094 - Fifth Avenue
- 9095-9099, 9110-9129 - 126th Street
- 9100-9109 - Queens Village
- 9130-9159 - Castleton

- 9160-9239 - West Farms
- 9240-9309 - 100th Street

From what could be pieced together of the Grumman allotments (as of 1982):

- 199 - Queens Village
- 201-208, 436-452, 503-541, 553-565 (those last 13 to have been Avenue B & East Broadway) - Castleton
- 209-229, 322-342 - Fresh Pond
- 230-255, 343-380, 393-400 - Queens Village
- 256-321, 401-435, 453-502, 542-545 - Ulmer Park
- 546-552 - 54th Street

- 601-692, 811-832 - 54th Street
- 693-709, 833-869 - Amsterdam
- 710-810, 870-910 - Coliseum

- PA1-PA5, PA92-PA96 - 126th Street
- PA6-PA23, PA70-PA85 - Fresh Pond
- PA24-PA31 - Ulmer Park
- PA32-PA69 - Castleton
- PA86-PA91 - Queens Village

- PA97-PA130 - 54th Street
- PA131-PA137 - Fresh Pond
- PA138-PA175 - Coliseum

1981 had a little bit different distribution of the MaBSTOA lot:

- 601-613, 811-816 - Hudson
- 614-627, 817-822 - 54th Street
- 628-654, 823-835 - 132nd Street
- 655-692, 836-853 - 146th Street
- 693-719, 854-866 - Amsterdam
- 720-770, 867-890 - Kingsbridge
- 771-810, 891-910 - Coliseum

- PA97-PA101 - Hudson
- PA102-PA106 - 54th Street
- PA107-PA116 - 132nd Street
- PA117-PA130 - 146th Street
- PA131-PA140 - Amsterdam
- PA141-PA160 - Kingsbridge
- PA161-PA175 - Coliseum

You can pretty much guess which areas were most affected by the final mothballing of the Grummans.

W.B.:

GREATLY appreciate your taking the time to post all of this detailed information, regarding the buses, their depots, and their allocations.

Thankfully, you obviously have much historical data at hand, to be able to provide such "in depth" information regarding bus operations of 40, 50, 60 years ago.

Back in the 80's, Your's Truly was busy "riding the rails" under and above ground, railfanning the subways (not surprisingly, the lines using the oldest equipment were my faves!) Wink

When the Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" were still running, I was planning to start "fanning" the buses, and taking photos.

Sadly, for whatever reason, this never came to pass. Sad

That is why I find the "Tee-Yay" and MaBSTOA photo galleries* at nycsubway.org so valuable, allowing me to both to see what I remembered, and, also, what I never got around to experience.

Thankfully, especially during the mid/late 1970's, I DID take a number of "indy" photos in my area of "Joisey".......so hard to believe that everything I photographed back then no longer exists..... Crying or Very sad

"NYO:

*Ever notice that the MaBSTOA galleries are far larger than that of the "Tee-Yay"?

Too, it seems that have to go through a large number of photos (involving scanning through many pages) before you start seeing some of the "Dangerfields".

But did you notice . . . among those 79 'PA' Grummans and 310 regular ones, not a single one at any point was allocated to 100th Street depot. Wonder if they thought even then the Grummans couldn't handle that steep hill on Lex between 102nd and 103rd . . . ? 'Dangerfields' could certainly handle that climb, as did the later RTS's.

But all this is important, as it is a window as to which buses among those lots were "snapped" in those pics taken in the 1980-82 period.
