The Grumman 870's used Gulton Luminator's LIDS IV first-generation electronic sign apparatus on their fronts and sides. Their type was taken directly from the RO3-2513/CGR-001 character set used most famously on the monitors associated with Apple II computer systems:

I'd count Luminator as my favorite as far as electronic signs go.
The next generation of Luminators (as on the 1982 set of RTS' - 1659-1833 for 'Tee-Yay', 2580-2704 for MaBSTOA, all in the 'T8J-204' make) changed the character appearance on numbers 2, 3, 6 and 9; and characters ( ^ ) (raised above), ( * ), ( - ) (3 columns wide instead of 5 columns) and ( . ) (four pixels instead of just one). It's the one listed as '5x7.fnt' on:
https://www.rollsigngallery.com/esigns/lumfontgraphics.html
That's not counting the lower case letters created there.
The sad part is, had the Grummans lasted one more day, they would have made it to the 20th anniversary of The Beatles' landmark appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Alas, it was not to be. Even though Grummans ran past The Ed Sullivan Theater every day via the M10 and M104 routes in their brief time in the sun.
Speaking of Ed Sullivan and The Beatles, today is the 58th of that famous event; at the time of that fateful day in 1964, all sorts of buses would have passed though what was then CBS Studio 50, from 1947-59 Old Looks to Mack C-49DT's, to the first-gen Fishbowls ordered by Fifth Avenue Coach Lines for itself and Surface Transit, and the first set of Fishbowls ordered in 1963 for MaBSTOA (all, in the case of the last-mentioned, on the M-104 at that point). It is not known whether this photo was taken in the morning or early evening (the time on the MONY clock read 5:44), but here's a shot facing north showing the south side of the CBS Studio 50 marquee advertising The Beatles' appearance that night:

Re. 155088: That's what I mean by the LIDS IV Luminator on the Grumman; the RTS (make T8W-204) has a TransDot electronic sign system which I wasn't as fond of. |

It was transitioning from . . .
WE'RE GLAD
to
TO BE BACK
A reference to their return to the streets after their first grounding.
I counted the zipping of the characters as 60 characters per minute. |

W.B.:
Appreciate that translation; I had NO idea what that sign was displaying!
And......speaking of the "Fab Four"; they "debuted", if you will, on Ed Sullivan (recall, too, "Topo Gigio"?) 58 years ago (1964); by the following year, John, Ringo, Paul, and George would be seen (via a Saturday cartoon show, which included their tunes!)
When the 870's first hit the streets, there was, I recall, a great deal of hoopla and a bright outlook for their future.
Sadly, that quickly changed.
I still fondly recall the ex-"Noo Yawk" 870's operating in "Joisey"; after a while, quite a few were listing to one side, interesting "sound effects" were now part of the package, and they because "quirky" enough to be quite endearing.
Alas, they've long since disappeared, leaving only fond recollections.......
