Greatly appreciate this info; I had NO idea that some of the 'cruisers became "donors", of sorts, to the MCI's that were converted into "combos".

This is news to me; I had no idea that any of the MCI's were converted into "combos" (I know I have never seen any photos)

*Just decided to consult my copy of "GREYHOUND SCENICRUISER" (McNally/Rayman):

".......essentially all the Scenicruisers were either out of service or sold off by 1978........"

Also, according to this book, conversion to "combo cars" began in 1967; roughly 100 SCENICRUISERS were eventually rebuilt into "combos"...

The MC-7’s that were converted were easy to spot, aside from the cargo door cut into their upper right side rear…they were the only 10-wheeler MC-7’s, as they had the dual reversed tag axle taken from the retired Scenicruiser’s. They needed them to carry the extra weight.

Again, greatly appreciate this info: I had no idea that MCI "combos" ever existed.

I only knew of the SCENICRUISER and EAGLE combos.

BTW: any MCI combo photos?

TRAILWAYS "combos" were known as "Cargo Liners".

With UPS and FED-EX so much in command these days, it is no wonder that such "combo" buses have passed into extinction (recall, too, how the massive, complex operation once known as REA fizzled out of the picture almost without a trace, by the late 1960's and early 1970's)......

While on the subject of passenger/cargo buses, we must make mention of the unique and distinctive "BRUCK".......

On this page (some VERY interesting VOLVO buses from many years ago are here!), be sure to check out the sleek, smart, and handsome "BANGOR & AROOSTOOCK" passenger/cargo bus*........ Wink

http://www.curbsideclassic.com/bus-stop-classic/bus-stop-classics-1950s-volvo-buses-some-mild-some-wild

*I have a number of vintage tin-litho friction buses that follow this same general design; the fronts, however, are more reminiscent of an AREOCOACH! Shocked

These include GREYHOUND, TRAILWAYS, and Army/Navy/Air Force buses....... Very Happy

In discussing "combo" buses, mention must be made of the long-since-vanished "HPO" (Highway Post Office), the last of which vanished in 1974 (video included on this page)..........

In 1950, FLXIBLE built several HPO's.

These buses were identical to the CLIPPER, except that they had a higher roof and Railway Post Office-style interiors.....

Just an opinion......

One of the reasons, I feel, that the "passenger/cargo" concept fell by the wayside (for both GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS) was that both UPS and FedEx had the lion's share of the package business.

Long-haul buses carrying packages was, of course, a very old concept.

Too, back in the heyday of long-haul bus operations, deregulation was still a thing of the future; deregulation, indeed, was not kind to the operators of highway coaches.

Earlier, I'd discussed "HIGHWAY POST OFFICES" (HPO's); I've read that in certain European countries, the letters/packages were/are transported by buses, and not trucks.......

........forget cargo-passenger buses; today's highway bus operators are lucky to be able just to haul PASSENGERS, let alone cargo. Sad

That there is ANY long-haul bus operations in this country these days, between COVID, high fuel prices, and a host of other issues, is indeed noteworthy.

Recall, when the first COVID wave hit a few years back, how virtually EVERYTHING stopped; I can recall several carriers that were hit pretty hard, with scores of buses idled.....
