W.B.:
GREAT examples, to say the least!
Since posting that photo of that "WELCOME ABOARD" sign (TWA) I cannot help but wonder if any other airline utilized similar illuminated boarding signs.
I KNEW my hunch was correct, that here was some sort of "transit" connection......

GREEN BUS #1013 (RTS) at JFK, 1980.
In the far background, note the Fishbowl and the TWA sign......

W.B.:
This huge NATIONAL billboard dates to the 1950's (note the touting of the "DC-7 STAR"); also, note, that this was still a time when regularly-scheduled flights to Havana were still being operated.......

Re: the TWA sign on Randolph Avenue:
By the early 60's, all TWA transatlantic flights were handled by jets; the remaining Connies were relegated to domestic flights only.
Others had either been converted into freighters or sold.......

And who was responsible for that TWA sign's construction and fabrication? None other than Douglas Leigh's organization and Artkraft Strauss - with Trans-Lux supplying the controls for the two "zippers." Just like in Times Square.

I don't want to be picky but... you have this listed as a Queens operator when in reality it is a ex-Detroit TDH-5105 that was acquired by queens Transit and here we see it as an Avenue B and Broadway bus...
It appears that the shop took a curtain, perhaps from a Mack, and cut off the M9 Ave. B portion of both signs and just glued them together inside the glass.
Also, note the three types of buses... an old look, a new look, and a Flxible built in Evergreen, Alabama

My sources tell me that the TWA "Welcome Aboard" signs were used throughout the 60's and early 70's at stations that did not have jetways.

In 1971 Queens Transit acquired 15 ex Detroit Street Railway GM TDH-5105s and repainted and renumbered them 872-885.
From January to September, 1975 Avenue B and East Broadway Transit leased the following buses from Queens Transit numbers 882, 872, 876, 877, 878. They kept the Queens Transit colors and numbers.
Avenue B also leased from Hausman five ex-South Suburban Safeway Lines TDH-5105s that kep the SSS Lines colors and numbers, 517, 533, 537, 564, 572.

MaBSTOA 15:
GREATLY appreciate the additional info you provided; thank you!
Also appreciate the information on the TWA "WELCOME ABOARD" sign; this sign, then, would have been used at the (old) Newark Airport, which was never equipped with jetways.
Jetways did not come to Newark (EWR) until the new terminal(s) opened in the 1970's, which relegated the 1953 terminal to lesser duties, before it closed entirely about 1990.......
