"Bowling Alley" seating and express services:

1:

What "Noo Yawk" buses were the first to have "bowling alley" seating? (Fishbowls? Flexies, and what routes were they used on?)

2:

When did the "Tee-Yay" initiate its first true "express" services? (i.e. Staten Island-Manhattan, etc.)

Any info on the "M23X" Wall Street Express?

That #4499 seems to be displaying a new roller curtain (instead of some sort of temporary cardboard sign) seems to elude that this was to be an "established" route.

At the outset of M23X' existence - it was first put into service in April 1971 - express buses came from many depots (another M23X pic taken in that location showed one of the MaBSTOA Flxibles from one of the Bronx depots); it wasn't until 1972 that it was permanently assigned to 100th Street depot, with 8459-8477 from the 1966-67 order of A/C "batwing" Fishbowls being converted to express bus seating - supplemented by the 1972-73 order of T6H-5310A's 4500-4505 - taking care of business.

But that front roll sign had a newly-printed add-on from Transign - evidently hastily struck, given the combination of their custom fonts plus what looked like hand painting onto mylar.

Greatly appreciate this info; bygone "express" services is an interesting topic on its own.

Back in the 1980's, a close friend of mine (who was also the head of my work station at the NYSE) then lived in Oakwood Heights (SI) and commuted in via express bus.

I once asked him why he simply didn't take the SIRT to the ferry; turns out, he was prone to seasicknes! Shocked

Another of my friends from work lived in Brooklyn, but, due to subway crime, eventually switched over to an express bus.

It would seem to me that the Staten Island express buses, crossing the VZ Bridge, added a bit of a "scenic" diversion to an otherwise mundane commute......

Photo caption says that #4329 is a MaBSTOA bus (on the "B15"), but, if you look under the side numbers, it looks like it reads "New York City Transit Authority"........

Actually, sounds like it'd be a surprise to MaBSTOA to find B15 as one of their routes, given that it was long a 'Tee-Yay' route - and #4329 was indeed one of the 1970-71 fleet of T6H-5305A's ordered for the TA.

#7093 is also a 'Tee-Yay' bus if you look very closely; the Flxies of 1973-74 ordered for MaBSTOA - and all at Hudson depot at that point - were numbered 7300-7361. 126th Street depot in Manhattan ('MAN' on the fareboxes) got the lowest-numbered of that lot (I saw low 7000's in pics taken of the time running on routes like M15).

Always greatly enjoying reading your comments and historical "trivia".

Regarding "Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA "swapping", was there any particular reasons for this procedure?

Equipment shortages in one area, for instance?

By the early 1980's, I know, of course, there were equipment shortages throughout the (bus) system, with all of the GRUMMANS being withdrawn, and Fishbowls and Flexies being borrowed from WAMATA to help fill in the void.......
