Here's Old Look #9043 working the "R7", back in 1970.

According to the roller curtain, the destination was the VZ Bridge; I assume that this "local" route began at the St. George ferry terminal.

I'm thinking that either this route did not exist prior to the opening of the Bridge in late 1964, or, if it was already in service, had its terminal point extended from its original location to the Bridge......

Based on the font used on that left side roll sign, I'd venture it was struck around 1964. Many cloth roll signs used by MaBSTOA at their 132nd Street depot had that type font used on Old Looks.

Such as this:

W.B.

Thanks; I see my first hunch was right, that this route dated to the opening of the VZ Bridge.

It would have been interesting to see Old Looks equipped with "bowling alley" seating and being used on express runs, had they lasted that long.....

PS:

Sure wish I had that roller curtain in my collection! Wink

From: "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS" (McKane/Squier); this refers to "bowling alley" seating in fourth-generation Fishbowls for New York:

"......the obvious difference between the 5309 and 5310 were the employed of longitudinal cantilevered fiberglass seats mounted from the sidewalls of the 5309. This eliminated any mountings of the seats to the floors....."

".......the 'bowling alley' perimeter seating for 43 pasengers was similar to the earlier 5303's for New York....."

From: "THE BUS WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BUSES" (Stauss):

Starting in 1968, VS transmissions with overdrive were being offered as options for high-speed expressway operations...."

The following is below a caption beneath a photo of an MTA Fishbowl:

".....1972 T6H-5310A, special interior design for express service in New York City and Long Island, utilizing high-back seating, except over the wheels...."

Incidentally, that that FACO rollsign was 1964 was given away by:
- The complete absence of '1 - Fifth Avenue' (discontinued 1962)
- The complete absence of 15 Jackson Heights and 16 Elmhurst Crosstown (both at the ex-NYCO depot at 54th Street by then)
- The complete absence of '19 - Fifth Ave-Riverside Dr' (discontinued 1962)
- The complete absence of '6 - 72 St Crosstown' and '20 - 57 St Crosstown' (both also at 54th Street depot)

MSBA Fishbowl #475, 1976.

Am curious if any of the MSBA buses ever utilized "bowling alley" seating in express service......

W.B.:

Speaking of vintage rollsigns:

On COMMAND's #290's roller curtain, note "IND-IRT-BMT SUB".

These were dated designations, even back in 1981!
