Note "regular" reading displayed on #6870's front sign, while offside rear sign reads "SPECIAL".
Also, note the rear advertising card for "ZORBA"/"CABARET"/"FIDDLER ON THE ROOF".......

To my knowledge, there was never an updated insert to MaBSTOA's batwing side signs printed up upon the demise of the 2 Fifth-Madison-Lenox line and the launch of 101A. Many batwings that served on that line had either 'SPECIAL', '101 3rd-LEX-AMST AVES' and, in one pic taken that year, '2 5th & MADISON VIA LENOX'! I doubt OA had new batwing side signs printed past the sets made for the then-new A/C batwings in December 1966. A shame, given how in the outer boroughs there were batwing side signs for 'Tee-Yay' routes with dates like 1971. There should have been a '101A 3rd-LEX-LENOX AVES' indicator there on the sides, for sure, as there was on the non-batwings (I seem to remember non-batwing side signs were updated around 1971 upon the creation of the M23X express route).

Here, #6747's front curtain reads: "6 to SOUTH FERRY", while the rear offside sign only shows a "6", as if the rest of the curtain had been removed....

*The "Tee-Yay" inspector/dispatcher (or whatever) seems to be in deep concentration of some sort. |
Sounds like it was cut because it was the 'wrong' 6 (i.e. the one with '72 STREET CROSSTOWN' indicated). At one time or another the 54th Street depot was home to both 6's - even after the 72nd Street one was renumbered M30 in 1974. |

W.B.:
....let me just say that the "rollsign guys", back in the day, MORE than had their work cut out for them!
Until I had joined this board nearly 15 years ago, I had not the slightest inkling of the vast complexities involving the rollsigns that were once carried by "Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA buses, let alone the many route changes, cutbacks, etc., which took place over the years.
Personally, I still lament the eventual discontinuance of the rear sign; they added that little bit "extra" to the overall look of the buses themselves; in any event, I really missed them when they disappeared altogether.
Ditto the the PS/TNJ buses; I had no idea, back then, when batwing buses were going to be retired, and, it seemed, one fine day, I saw they were all gone.
Again, I always greatly appreciate your always educational and greatly-enlightening input........

Circa-early 1970's, we see #8103 departing the former BMT station at Rockaway Parkway (note the prewar IND cars in the background, which had replaced, for a time, the venerable "Standards" on the 14th St. line, then designated the "LL")
Note that the rear batwing sign is blank; bus was holding down a schedule on the "42 to BELT PARKWAY".......

Undated (1970's-era) photo taken at the Crosstown Depot; also, in the background, you'll see a non-batwing Fishbowl still sporting the classic "Tee-Yay" green and script lettering.
Note, also, that the bus that was the the photographer's subject (#8075) is here sporting the newer, lower-case signage up front, while retaining the older "all caps" style at the rear......

Besides the bus (note blank rear offiside sign), there is much "street nostalgia" to be seen in this vintage 1971 photo, snapped at Nostrand & Avenue H.......
