This was the reverse of #154085 - TB showing front, the rear sign showing something else.
Reminds me of a Chico Marx joke from Duck Soup . . . |

Front sign is displaying a "TB" run, while the offside sign box is empty.....

In less than three months, that branch would become the first M34. |

Through yourself, and our good friend MaBATOA 15, I have since learned that the history of bus routings/sign variations/route changes/branches, re-numberings/etc., in "Noo Yawk" is indeed an intense (and COMPLEX!) study unto itself.
Some of these changes were (more-or-less) no-brainers; others, however, are indeed best headed under the "WTF" category, as you had mentioned earlier.
Ahhh, the ever-timeless, ever-amusing Marx Brothers (Groucho was always my fave!).....recall the classic jam-packed stateroom scene in "A Night In The Opera" (this clearly was inspired by a typical IRT rush hour!)

Hunts Point & Bruckner, 1981.
The old gabled building on the right (now housing shops) was, until 1937, the NYW&B Ry's Hunts Point Station.
When this now-classic photo was snapped, the big, green, owl-eyed MU's of "The Westchester" had been gone for well over 40 years.....

Actually, it was the same route, but the number changed: (QM)15 listed on the side sign, the renumbering as M32 on the front. That was updated. The side sign was not. This was actually taken May 6, 1974 - nearly two months before QM15 became M32. The front and (non-batwing) side roll signs with these new numbers were prepared some three months in advance of the changes taking place. And yet the side signs STILL said 'M10 Bway' and 132nd Street depot front roll signs listed an 'M10 135 St Only' and 'M10 168 Street' - the only "duplicative" route not to have been renumbered. |

Broadway & 216th St., 1972.
Yes, my children, way back in the day, buses used to be garaged in old trolley barns.....
