The only thing that hadn't changed - yet - was what was in front of Shea Stadium. They still had at that point what looked like confetti festooning the stadium facade. That didn't come down, I don't think, until about the 1980's. |

W.B.:
I really liked that "confetti" facade; it always reminded me of the '64 Fair.
A the very least, Bombers' fans can STILL say "I'm gonna catch a game at Yankee Stadium."; Mets fans, on the other hand, can no longer say, "I've got two tickets to the Mets game at Shea."
"Citi Field" simply does not do it for me (and also, I am sure, most old-school Mets fans would agree); it simply sounds too corporate, too generic.
Even if one caught a Mets game on the tube, years ago, could they ever forget that awesome Shea Stadium organ....no wonder "Mr. Met" was alway grinning......

.......just several days ago, it seemed that the Yankees were getting pretty much glowing reports and write-ups from all aspects of the media; well, after last night's rout in Boston, how quickly the media "switched gears".
Any given team are only media "darlings" while the victories continue.....

Mention must also be made, in recalling rapid transit to the old ballparks, of the long-forgotten 9th Avenue El/Polo Grounds shuttle (this photo dates to 1940)......

Gritty 1950's scene of a IRT Lo-V train at Sedgwick Avenue, with the old Polo Grounds in the background.....

Back in the day, downtown Brooklyn was a clanging, clattering, chaotic conglomeration of trolleys; it is no wonder, then, that the fabled Brooklyn Dodgers were once known as the "Trolley Dodgers".......

It is said that of the Yankees that they actually have two squads, each of which looks exactly like the other, and with the same names in the same positions: the one that wins games, and the other that loses them. The losing squad seems to have had happen to them similar to the question posed by Walter Brennan in the 1944 film To Have And Have Not: "Was you ever bit by a dead bee?"
But the dynamic about when each team loses is definitely different from one another, for different reasons. |

W.B,:
Interesting viewpoint....makes sense to me me!
IMHO, it would seem that The Amazins, likewise, have TWO squads; sadly, the squad that seems to be on a perpetual losing streak obviously had been out on the field for far more games that the "winning squad" ever played this late season.
It IS sad, though, that neither "Noo Yawk" team made the post season; oh, well, there's always next season n to dream about.....

As witness to the massive crowds that jammed the IRT trains to the old Yankee Stadium, way back in the day, there is an interesting picture in the book "SUBWAY" (Diehl) that shows a block signal bearing a plate reading:
"BALL-
GAME
STOP"
Clearly, the INTERBOROUGH operated a number of baseball specials, way back in the day.......
