W.B.:
I think you might be right on that; I now remember hearing from some of the drivers whom I knew years ago (here in "Joisey") that they had heard that it was getting more and more difficult to get replacement parts for the batwing signs.
I really missed them when they disappeared; they really gave the Fishbowls a colorful, distinctive look after dusk.
In my area, only the TNJ Fishbowls were ever equipped with batwings, and, those buses that were so equipped, REALLY stood out!

One shame I.M.H.O., was that the batwings, when finally chucked, weren't replaced with the big long corrugated metal that were put atop passenger windows on the "suburban" buses. |

Agreed.
Had the "batwing era" not ended, I wonder what the RTS fleet might have looked like, so equipped? (sure would have been interesting!)
Perhaps it is just as well that batwing ads are no more; I shudder when I think of giant, monstrous video screens atop the current milk cartons, smaller versions of the Times Square mega-monstrocities.
Some things are indeed better off left to the imagination.....

Stillwell Avenue, 1977.
On a cold, slushy day, Fishbowl #8854 patiently awaits the next run.
Up above, note the train of graffiti-scarred R-27/30's; I've always liked these cars, but the "Ronan" paint did nothing whatsoever for them.
The two-tone blue worn by the buses indeed was QUITE attractive, even though I did prefer the old "Tee-Yay" green.......

The "Ronan paint" scheme was an effort to carbon copy the scheme of the stainless-steel/LAHT/aluminum cars from R-40M through R-46 (my description was what was actually mentioned in the brochure for the original slant R-40's). That worked well for those cars, but on the 1948-64 SMEE's (such as those R-27/30's) it looked like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Some things are just better off left uncopied. |

W.B.:
Recall, also, the original M-1's (LIRR/Harlem & Hudson Divisions); in later years, these cars lost their original blue striping.
All the "Ronan" paint did, at least, as far as the subway cars went, was to "set the stage", so to speak, for the all-engulfing tidal wave of graffiti that would soon cover virtually ever car in the fleet, inside and out.
And DON'T ask me what genius came up with the INSANE idea of painting the subway cars WHITE(!!)
That was like giving a sheet of blank white paper to a toddler and then, after giving him a crayon, instructing him thusly: "SCRIBBLE ON IT!"
Talk about "what the $^#@@!* was this moron thinking??

Sad.........(and even SADDER, that some misguided individuals called this hideous vandalism "art")

Go figure!!!!!
Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and tastes, but, what it all boils down to, is that graffiti is ILLEGAL (not to mention an EYESORE!!)
I've read that many correctly were made aware was that the subway graffiti bombardment was a frightening sign of a city out of control, in the throes of chaos.
Speaking of illegal activities, in view of the widespread looting and vandalism that took place during the '77 blackout, I am sure that the buses were impacted, especially in Brooklyn.
What a difference compared to the November, 1965 blackout, when crime was virtually nil........go figure.....

Nothing at all to speak of, "tag"-wise, here, when compared to the all-out "attack" on the subways, back in the day.....
