Too bad you had no Flx's like #5091 plying, say, lower Manhattan streets as GM Fishbowl #57 did in the second photo. The 'Tee-Yay' seemed to give Manhattan short shrift in terms of bus distribution by depot compared with the other three boroughs they served. |

W.B,:
Something like that REALLY would have brightened my day!
I remember taking photos (which I have sadly misplaced and not seen in ages) of the "relief" WAMATA buses; though I didn't get to ride on one then, I DID ride, almost daily, an ex-WAMATA Flex New Look, in use on the old NHBL #1 (the bus was using an ancient Johnson farebox, obviously salvaged from a long-ago scrapped NHBL bus!)
The bus had bucket seats, which, remarkably, were in pretty good shape (this was about 1995/1996)
I didn't take any photos, but, at least, I had the experience of riding this transplanted classic.....

Here's a rare photo of one of the borrowed WAMATA buses at St. George, with a GRUMMAN right behind......

(ATTN: W.B.): Broadway & 42nd St., 1981.
Note, here, that this borrowed WAMATA Fishbowl #6439 (note the less-than-informative sign box!), holding down an "M104" schedule, is still wearing the old 1960's "DC TRANSIT" paint scheme.
Also, there is MUCH nostalgia here (vehicular, signage, etc.)........

Hylan & Richmond, 1981.
Note that the borrowed WAMATA Flex is carrying a "103" card in the windshield
The two-tone "Em-Tee-Yay" Fishbowl just behind also has an empty sign box, and is also displaying a card in the windshield.....

If it's Staten Island, that WMATA must be on an S103 run . . . |

In the background was County Federal Savings, with the temperature at 62 degrees; the shape of the 4 x 7 numbers indicates the mechanism for that time/temp display being from Time-O-Matic (now WatchFire). |

W.B.:
You're the man who is In the know", I'm sure, here......
When did the borrowed WAMATA buses head back to DC?
As I had mentioned earlier here, back in 1995/1996, an ex-WAMATA Flex New Look (still in WAMATA paint) was being used on what was the old NHBL's #1, between Nungessers and Journal Square.
About 1997, the bus vanished; I never saw it again.
I'm wondering how and when this ex-WAMATA bus was purchased by the "indy" outfit that I remember operating it; when I rode it, it was at least 13 /14 years since the WAMATA buses "pinch-hitted" for the grounded GRUMMANS......

When did the WMATA buses go back to DC? I'm estimating not long after some 'Tee-Yay' A/C Flxies from 1969-70 were sent there after a couple of the WMATA buses fell into the water following the collapse of the Castleton depot in 1981. |

W.B.:
I well remember seeing newspaper photos of those unfortunate buses that found themselves assigned to the "Davey Jones Locker Express" route; I remember it being on the news as well......

"CONGA LINE" (Hillside & Merrick, 1985)
This is one of my favorite pictures; if such a photo were to be taken today, using these type of buses, it would hav to be at some sort of vintage bus rally!!!
On the far left, note the old "Tee-Yay" Flexie, STILL attired in green!
