Here, a dapper driver is in charge of Flex #4657, which. at the moment, is devoid of ad cards.
From what we can see here, it sees as though that it was still the old "Tee-Yay" era........

In 1971, Fishbowl #8873 (here sporting a lower-case roller curtain) is seen at the BMT station at Rockaway Parkway (back then, the "LL" today's "L", trains terminated here (you can just glimpse the trains in the background; the venerable BMT "Standards", at the time of this photo, had already been retired two years)......

Wouldn't that be 5657? 4657 would have been still serving on Bronx routes for MaBSTOA at that point, and was the first set of buses for OA with the 'M' insignia on the entrance side. Here's the ad-less bus:

As for the mistyped 4657, here's the closest, 4656 at the 126th Street and 2nd Avenue terminus, running on Bx-29, with the Citgo display on Bruckner Boulevard across the river in the background (the numeral banks were 12 x 17 matrix - I measured):

I know we had discussed this quite awhile back, here, but I'm curious as to when the first generation "Tee-Yay" Fishbowls were retired.
If I'm not mistaken, it seemed that they were only in service for a little over a decade or so before they were retired.
This does not sound like a long service life, when compared to how long the RTS stayed in service, and the square-window Old Looks.....

Here's another "very late in the game" Old Look photo, taken of Old Look #9000 in 1972, on Staten Island.

I know that the 9000's (TDH-5106) were the last Old Looks purchased by the "Tee-Yay".
I've read that this series was initially assigned to the short (but very crowded) "B39/WILLIAMSBURG BRIDGE" route.
Were the 9000's ever assigned to other Brooklyn routes?

The first group of 'Tee-Yay' Fishbowls (1-190) were retired within 1972-73; a few were placed in parks service, as I seem to recall some pictures floating around therein. Definitely 1973 was when the two groups of 1960 Fishbowls ordered initially for FACL and ST were retired, after the last several years in service on Bronx routes assigned to Kingsbridge depot, and after the newest T6H-5309A's arrived on that and the West Farms property.
I think the next set of TA Fishbowls (500-809) saw retirement within the 1973-74 period, as the 7000 series Flx New Looks were first broken in on 'Tee-Yay' routes. Those first-gens would have been the oldest to see service in Manhattan after the consignment of FACL/ST Fishbowls to the Bronx, and certainly in relation to the 1963-67 MaBSTOA Fishbowls that plied the borough up to the first 20 of the 5309A's being parked at Hudson depot for service on Manhattan routes assigned there starting in early '73. Must've been later in the 1970's when the 1000's ordered in '61 were put to pasture; there were enough 2000's to cover in 1981 for when the infamous Grummans had the first of service "pulls," hence they'd have had the oldest span of service on the streets of NYC. |

Thanks for the VERY detailed (and VERY prompt!) response to my inquiry!
I still, to this day, clearly recall the news report on WNEW-5 News, when the ill-fated GRUMMANS were pulled from service (early 1980's), and the cameraman then focused on a parade of "decade-and-a-half-old-clunkers" (a described by the WNEW reporter) showing stored buses in "Tee-Yay" green lumbering out of a depot (I wonder what depot this was?)
I would imagine these buses were repainted, as I cannot recall seeing any green buses anywhere, when I was working in the city.
I am sure these "reprieved" buses were retired when the first order of RTS started arriving.......

#4309 in that same picture was from the last set of Fishbowls (4300-4499) to have the green paint scheme as when first placed into service. Years later certain of its brethren would turn up on MaBSTOA routes in Manhattan. |

Regarding buses assigned to certain depots:
How much "shuffling" took place during the 60's, with buses being transferred from one depot to another (or, from one borough to another)?
I read that the 6000-series MACKS (C-49's) had started life on Brooklyn routes, but, later on, found themselves running on Staten Island (there is a 1967 photo of #6002, running on the "R-112", in "NEW YORK TRANSIT MEMORIES" (Harold A. Smith)
Growing up in the 60's, I can remember that, until much later in the decade, the only buses you'd see on Staten Island were Old Looks and MACKS.
Getting back to "shuffling", I'm curious as to how many ex-FACCo/MaBSTOA might have roamed to other boroughs/depots, over the years......
