Here we have two B&QT Peter Witts at Flatbush and Livingston, with a new ("Bingham") MACK C-50-DT on the right (these buses were purchased between 1950 and 1951)........

Here's an interesting view, circa-1940, snapped at Fulton & Greene; thi is one of those nostalgic views sure to make "Old school" transit buffs" drool, including Your's Truly!
So much of interest here; the single-ended Peter Witt (note the angular contours of the rear end that characterized the 6000-series cars), the BMT "C" unit train rumbling overhead, the vintage taxis, and the two-light traffic signal.
Also, note the vintage "TROLLEY STATION" sign, commonplace in Brooklyn until the 1950's......

"THE VICTORS" (former B&QT East New York car house)
The old streetcars, here, at the former ENY depot, have now been vanquished, replaced by buses.
Note the rows of MACKS parked where once rows of streetcars once awaited their next call to duty; also, note how the tracks from the street, leading into the car depot, have been paved over.
For now, the now-useless line poles in front of the building remain in place; note, also, that, for now, streetcars are still serving the area, as is witnessed by the doubl-ended Peter Witt passing in front of the former car depot.....

Does the D on the Twin mean diesel?
I never rode Myrtle-Court to this loop. Sometime in the 1930's, B&QT management saved money by tying lines end-to-end, giving them hyphenated names, as Smith-Coney Island, McDonald-Vanderbilt, Myrtle-Court, Sumner-Sackett, Ralph-Rockaway, Utica-Reid. I would not care to defend my explanation on each of these routes, by the way. To find two routes to unite, traffic loads on each half had to be similar. I think it is funny that the TA had to untie Crosstown into the 61 and 62 to improve reliable scheduling, but combined Court with Flushing, running from Red Hook to Maspeth! |

Regarding the "D" prefix on that bus: your guess is as good as mine, at this point.
Like many other cities, Brooklyn's vast streetcar network was granted a temporary "stay of execution" when WW2 hit; as with PSNJ, and other companies, older Brooklyn cars were taken out of storage, to help cope with the heavy wartime traffic.
Famed transit historian (and hockey maven) Stan Fischler had many Brooklyn streetcar lines he regarded as personal favorites, including:
NOSTRAND
OCEAN
NORTON'S POINT
VANDERBILT
TOMPKINS
FLATBUSH
LORIMER
FRANKLIN
BERGEN
MYRTLE
BROADWAY
GRAHAM
FULTON
As with PSNJ, here in NJ, while a number of new Brooklyn bus routes followed the old streetcar lines in pretty much the same manner, other lines were cut back, or now followed more convoluted routes
Private ROW's fell by the wayside (and, from photos I've seen, were quite commonplace on the B&QT system.......

Note the different paint schemes on these double-ended Peter Witts at the Fresh Pond yards; this facility closed in 1950.

An "old timer" B&QT motorman poses in front of his trusty electric steed, Peter Witt #8426 (note the old-fashioned change maker in his hand)
The motormen and conductors, way back then, also looked quite proud in their uniforms, when they posed for a photo with their trolleys.
This picture was taken at Rockaway Parkway, where riders could transfer to the BMT's 14th St. subway line (today's "L" train).......

The old-fashioned lines of elderly B&QT convertible #4573 contrast sharply with sleek, new (postwar) TWIN COACH #1733* (bus is signed for "52-GATES AVENUE")
Note the complex "special work" in the cobblestones.

In the late 1940's, we see a B&QT "ol'-tyme" convertible (#4573) on a fan trip at Fresh Pond; also, note the elderly train of wooden El cars climbing the ramp to the Myrtle Avenue line.
Streetcars last called at Fresh Pond in 1950.......
