It was mentioned that within the Elmhurst Avenue station, the bus serving the area was Q53 - which, in Mr. X' day, was operated by Triboro Coach. So in short, it was in one of the "private" zones.

W.B.:

Thanks; I didn't get a chance to read through the page; thanks for the heads-up.

I DID have the feeling that a "private" company would have been serving that area (in 1965), but, not being knowledgeable about that area, I could only guess.

Thanks again...... Wink

No doubt some of the more recent 'Old Looks' and a couple Flxies. We don't know if they had some earlier generation 'Fishbowls', though, given that only 68 photos of buses within Triboro's fleet are "out there."

W.B.:

I checked Mr. Greller's "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES" book, to see if I could find anything else, regarding TRIBORO's fleet in the 1965 era.

TRIBORO's first Fishbowls entered service in 1960 (these were 10 TDH-5302's); three orders were delivered that year.

Five more Fishbowls arrived on TRIBORO property in 1962.

Fifty-one "second generation" Fishbowls (5303's) were purchased between 1964 and 1968.

In 1965, the company was the first in New York to purchase Flex New looks.

The last Old Looks to arrive on the property (in 1961) were 20 TDH-4507's, dating back to 1948 (these were ex-"Tee-Yay" buses).........

What "Tee-Yay" (or private) bus lines would have been in operation in that area then?

Appreciate input.....

Malcolm X lived in EAST Elmhurst a couple of miles north and east of Elmhurst. Buses serving the community were Triboro's Q19, 19B, 23, 72, Queens Transit's Q66 along Northern Blvd., the southern border of East Elmhurst, and a short stretch of the TA's Q48 on it's way to and from LaGuardia.

X-Astorian:

You are correct; I always, for some reason, make this error....thanks for the correction! Wink

Also, appreciate the information regarding the bus lines in that era at the time that Malcolm lived in East Elmhurst.

I've read that old-time conductors (subway/LIRR), many eons ago, pronounced it "ELMHOIST"!" Shocked

From what you've told me, there was no shortage of bus services in that area.......thanks again!

W. B. Fishbowl wrote... (And didn't they, afterwards, have differing stops - 1-4-15 and 2-3-5?)

You are correct, along Fifth and Madison Avenues the buses alternated their stops... I believe that the 1, 4, and 15 stopped at even number corners and the 2, 3, 5, stopped at odd number corners.

If memory serves me right, I think that at some important corners, such as 34th Street, 42nd Street and 57th Street the 1, 4, 15 stopped at the southern corner while the 2, 3, 5 stopped at the northern corner of the same block.

This kept the traffic moving without the buses blocking the traffic lanes.

(Did the specific bus lanes of the 1980s replaced this system?)

The 1960 Triboro Coach fleet was composed of the following buses...

Pre-War models

#s 1051-1058... Yellow Coach model 740 (1939)
#s 881-904... ACF model 45-S (1942)

{These buses were rebuilt in 1953 with GM parts(!)... ThermoMatic roof grills (above the destination sign); iconic GM chrome wings and GM badge; wide chrome bumpers; sealed headlights and new paint scheme identical to the post war old look buses. The 740 received new driver windows and the 45-S received ACF-Brill windshields from the C-36/C-44 models}

Post-War models... The Old Looks

#s 1101-1125... GM model TDH-4507 (1948-1949)
#s 701-720... GM model TDH-5106 (1957)
# 1126... GM model TDH-4506... ex-Surface Transit... acquired 1959
#s 1127-1152... GM model TDH-4507... ex-TA acquired 1959 and 1961
#s 1161-1166... GM model TGH-4006... ex-Trenton Transit acquired 1962
#s 1134, 1136... GM model TDH-4510... ex-TA acquired 1968
#s 1137-1139... GM model TDH-5101... ex-TA acquired 1968

{GM models TDH-4509 (#s 1151-1165 & 1171-1175, bought new) and models TDH-5104 (#s 1181-1195, bought new) were sold in 1959. Ten of the fifteen 5104s went to Schenk out in Long Island}

{The six model TGH-4006 were converted to diesel by Trenton. I remember leaving high school at 6:00 PM (I was on the afternoon shift) and waiting in the bitter cold specifically to ride these buses on route Q29!}

The New Looks...

#s 731-740... GM model TDH-5302 (1960)
#s 751-790... GM model TDH-5301 (1960) purchased in three groups
#s 795-799... GM model TDH-5301 (1962)
#s 801-815... Flxible model F2D6V-401-1 (1964)
#s 820-829... Fllxible model F2d6V-401-1 (1964)
#s 901-920... GM model TDH-5303 (1964)
#s 931-946... GM model TDH-5303 ex-Greyhound World's Fair bought 1966
#s 951-965... GM model TDH-5303 (1968)
#s 970-984... GM model T6H-5305A (1968)

{The ten model TDH-5302 did not last long on the property, they were sold off}

A Triboro anecdote... I remember skipping high school and taking the Q45 out of the Victor Moore Arcade and paying the 15 cent fare and traveling to Juniper Valley. There, I transferred to the Q38 (I used my student pass in order to keep the paper Q45 transfer - I still have the pass and the transfer!). The Q38 only had about three or four passengers besides me. I noticed that the driver allowed the passengers not to pay their fare - the reason was that the Grant fare box was jammed with coins. When we got to the Queens and Junction Boulevard stop a Triboro pick up was waiting with several Grant boxes on its bed. The mechanic unlocked and twisted off the Grant, threw it on the back of the pick up and brought in a new one. The driver filled out some paper work and we were off!

Finally, the photo below shows part of the fleet outside the Triboro garage (I would say sometime 1960-161)

Starting with the back row and left to right...

(Listing only the models)

740, 5301,4507

Second row, closes to the camera...

4507, 5106, 740, 4507, 45-S, 4507, 4507, 5106

Enjoy!

......once again, THANK YOU for taking the time to post so much interesting historical data, regarding the bus operations of many years ago; too, it helps to put the past "into respective", regarding a certain era.

The photo you posted is truly one that will indeed "warm the cockles" of any "old-school" bus enthusiast (Your's Truly included!) Wink

The lone, Fishbowl, indeed, is the "odd one out", but also, at the same time, shows just how advanced the "New Look" design was, especially when compared to older buses.

Again, thanks again....... Wink

Two quick questions here for the experts (and we have several outstanding ones, here) Very Happy

I know that FACCo. began service on the "#15 JACKSON HEIGHTS" line in 1925.

Did the company ever contemplate operating other services in Queens?

Also, I know that when service began, single-deck Class "J" buses were initially used; when were the first double-deckers* used on this line?

Thanks in advance for any and all input.....

"NYO"

* I know that several of the earliest "Queen Mary" buses went into service on the "#15" prior to going onto any other route, because they were built to slightly different specifications, due to the lower height required for operating under the "El" in Queens.

They also operated the 16 Elmhurst Crosstown route. Both the 15 & 16 operated out of the 76th St and Northern Blvd. garage from 1925 to 1962.

Don’t forget that New York City Omnibus operated the TB route into Queens as well.

Thanks; I know that our friend W.B has, on several occasions, posted some interesting information on the old "TB" line, a route that is quite obscure today.......

And when MaBSTOA, in early 1973, upon their T6H-5309A's and 5310A's coming on the scene, added borough prefices for the first time to ex-FACCo and -NYCO routes, those routes were called QM15 and QM16 - irrespective of the latter not even setting foot on its route path through Manhattan though it was based out of 54th Street by then. Those nomenclatures duplicated those of two Green Bus Lines express routes - the Lindenwood-Manhattan and Rockaway Park-Manhattan, respectively. No doubt OA's QM16 designation was to distinguish from the TA's Q16 Fort Totten route as well as M16 - 34th Street Crosstown.

Both, of course, were part of the great Route Renumberings of 1974 - QM15 to M32, QM16 to Q89. (Though the pull-in, pull-out M10 Broadway, running between 168th Street and "135 St Only," kept its number despite it duplicating the route number of the Eighth Avenue-Central Park West line.)
