Any information on this route, showing a prewar TWIN COACH? (also, note TARS streetcar rails and overhead)

Note, also, the unusual "hump" on the roof of the bus.......

Postwar SURFACE Twin Coach; as was the case elsewhere in New York, these buses never really caught on, except for those postwar BoT TWINS which ran in Brooklyn and Queens.......

Quick note on the postwar TWINS, purchased by the BoT:

These buses entered service in 1947; they were numbered #1400-1524.

It seemed as though these sleek new buses vanished almost in the blink of an eye, when one considers how old the streetcars were that they replaced.

The CTA, on the other hand, had a huge fleet of (propane) postwar TWINS, that lasted into the 1970's.......

MaBSTOA and articulateds......

Am curious as to what routes are articulated buses used on (are articulateds used on any of these lines?), and when the first articulateds were used on MaBSTOA routes......

In the book "MALCLOM X: THE GREAT PHOTOGRAPHS", there is a photo from 1963, showing Malcolm and several associates leaving a restaurant at 166th St. & Lenox.

Heading away from the camera, a "four pack" of Old Looks is seen; several other New York photos in this book also have Old Looks in the background........

Also, in the aforementioned book, there is also a very dramatic photo which shows the ice-encrusted ruins of "Mosque #7", after the massive explosion and blaze had been extinguished (2/65)

On the corner, a subway entrance can be seen, covered with ice and debris; the only sign that can be seen on the entrance reads "SUBWAY".

The newest photo in this book dates to early 1965; no Fishbowls are seen in any of the photos where buses can be seen in the background, only Old Looks.

Another photo (dating from 1963) has a blurred Old Look going past the New York City Criminal Court Building.......

Must've been when 146th Street depot still had primarily their 1949 order 4509's. It wasn't until the 1965-66 order that the tide began to turn and New Looks began to dominate in the area. (Although, from 1964 to 1966, the #7 line was assigned out of 100th Street.) This dovetailed with the vast January 1966 service changes which saw Fifth Avenue become one-way southbound and Madison Avenue northbound.

W.B.:

As always, appreciate your input, regarding "the old days". Wink

I had mentioned previously, in an earlier post, that none of the photos in the aforementioned book showed New Looks (or MACKS, for that matter); one circa-1964 still photo seen in a mini-documentry on Malcolm X (seen on on the DVD of the "MALCOLM X" film), shows an Old Look heading towards the camera, while a (very blurred) Fishbowl is heading through an intersection, in the background.

As you stated, these photos were clearly snapped not long before the "tide turned", and the Old Looks began to be seen less and less, as the Fishbowls began replacing them (146th St. depot)......

BTW:

What (and when) was the last depot to stable MaBSTOA Old Looks, and what routes did they serve?

Any information on this route, showing a prewar TWIN COACH? (also, note TARS streetcar rails and overhead)

This is in Mt. Vernon, NY at South 5th Avenue and 1st Street. It is probably a Westchester Street Transportation coach as they were affiliated with TARS.
I lived in Mt. Vernon growing up. I vaguely remember this style Twin Coach. The first bus I remember as a kid was the Twin Coach by Fageol. It was the "A" bus that ran through Mt. Vernon to New Rochelle at one end and the NYC Subway station at the other.
I am not sure about 1st street whether it is East or West. I forgot where the line of demarcation is regarding whether a Street is East or West in Mt. Vernon.
I grew up on South 1st Avenue and East 3rd Street. WSTC used East 3rd Street. I would hang out there and watch the Fageol TC, Mack and GM old looks pass by.
The Lowes movie theater is on the other side of the New Haven - MT. Vernon East Metro North - railroad track pit. That 'pit' is the line of demarcation as to whether an Avenue is North or South in Mt. Vernon.

kdr3bt:

Truly appreciate this information; I had been curious about this photo for quite awhile now....thank you! Wink

Growing up in Hudson County, NJ, back in the 60's, I can recall similar prewar "TWINS" on the BERGEN AVENUE line in Jersey City; these buses had to be at least 30 years old when I was riding them with Mom.

Postwar TWIN/FAGEOLS would have been exotic sights, indeed, in my area, as no company used them that ran through my neighborhood.........

This photo, dating to about 1951, shows a TARS car on the "#7" line, with a postwar TWIN about to pass it (bus is on the "B" route); note the partially paved over crossover in the foreground......
