Again, it's always interested me that the 'Tee-Yay's' 1964-65 Flxies (such as the '65 order's samples at Flushing) were within the outer boroughs they served, only a few treading through Manhattan and only routes from one of those "outer boroughs," while the GM's ordered for MaBSTOA of the same period were in the heart of Manhattan (and several pockets of The Bronx). It's as if the Flxies were "off-Broadway, dinner theatre, road show" while the GM's were equivalent to "playing the Palace." A shame none of the 1964-65 Flxies, to my knowledge, saw significant action in Manhattan itself, especially on the TA's M15 route, except for a "borrowed" bus or two.

W.B.:

"Bit Players", so to speak, or, "Cinderella buses", if you will...... Rolling Eyes

Usually, one thinks of the more "prestigious" Manhattan routes receiving new equipment first and foremost, while the lines in the outer boroughs would have had to suffice with older buses until some later date.

This reminds me of the "Tee-Yay's" first Fishbowls (the TDH-5301's), which were all assigned to operate in Brooklyn; (recall, the "Tee-Yay" was then preparing to convert the last of Brooklyn's trolleybus lines).......

While their first Manhattan buses (amongst the second order of TDH-5301's) made their debuts in 1960 - several months after Fifth Avenue Coach Lines' first New Looks made their initial splash on Manhattan's streets.

I guess by 1965, the 'Tee-Yay's' 126th Street (MAN) depot was already fortified with the 7000-series Old Looks, 1960 Fishbowls, and part of the 1963 order, and thus it was decided not to allot even 10 or so of the Flxies of either 1964 or '65 there? (Certainly come 1972, when all MaBSTOA buses in Manhattan were TDH-5303's - the period after the last of their 1958-59 Old Looks were shuffled off to Brooklyn and before the first of OA's T6H-5309A's and 5310A's first came onto the scene - the 'Tee-Yay' arguably had the oldest of the New Looks running Manhattan's streets. Some of which started out in Brooklyn back in '59!)

W.B.:

You would be surprised how some folks ("not in the know") are almost shocked to discover that the first Fishbowls entered service in the last year of the 1950's (IMHO, many still think of Old Looks as the "trademark" 1950's transit bus!)

One of things I always liked about the "Flexies" is their windshields, which were clearly inspired by those used on the postwar TWINS.

The following from "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES" (Guy E. Martin):

".......'New Look' (GM) buses began to arrive in 1959. So many new buses were received in the postwar period, that numbering for the New Look buses started at '1'. The first lot were 190 TDH-5301's, numbered 1 through 190........"

"........these new buses were initially assigned to replace the remaining trolley bus routes in Brooklyn, but, later, went to Queens in 1964. Later orders of 5301's went to Brooklyn; then, in 1962, #'s 2001 through 2175 went to Queens......"

".....the first Flxibles arrived in 1964 (#'s 5001-5165); the second order of Flxibles were delivered between 1965 and 1966. The first order went to Brooklyn, and the second order went to the Jamaica garage. Later, all were transferred to the Flushing garage......"
