.....thinking of St. Patrick's Day in past years, I always thought it "appropriate" that the "Wearin' o' the green" was part of the attire of FACCo., MaBSTOA, and "Tee-Yay" buses for many years; this was especially "in sync" for buses operating on 5th Avenue routes! Wink

Regarding both the St. Patrick's and Puerto Rican Day Parades, I am sure that there must be old photos/footage of the parade where buses (Old Looks/Fishbowls) can be glimpsed in the background.

Though I'm a 100% teetoatler, I can remember seeing a number of Irish-owned bars/pubs in Woodside, near the IRT #7 elevated, back in the early/mid 80's (a close friend/co-worker of mine then lived in Woodside)

I also remember (from one of my then-frequent subway jaunts, and buying an ice from an older (very friendly) Puerto Rican gentleman, who sold Spanish ices (I had two, which I think only cost me $1.00 for both!)

They tasted quite refreshing on that hot day, near the IND station at 168th St station; this was going waaaaay back when the "C" was still the rush-hours "CC", using the old, noisy, ACF "Thunderbird" R-10's........aahh, the good ol' days........Very Happy

"Wearin' O' The Green" (Flatbush & Empire, 1972)

Here, #8065 is still wearing "The Green o' Erin", while displaying a Spanish ad on the dash.

'Tis a fine thing to think of St. Patrick himself blessin' the buses adorned in green......aahh, 'tis also the color of the wee shamrocks, and is that not grand enough?

Begorrah, I thinks so, meself....... Wink

A little "off topic" for this thread.......

......on this paradeless St. Patrick's Day, it's good to remember happier days, when "Cap'n Jack" McCarthy was the familiar voice of the St. Patrick's Day Parade, and the big green buses dominated 5th Avenue.

And, here's an interesting note on St. Patrick himself; his father, strange as it might seem, was Calpurnis, a Roman decurion.

Until Niall of the Nine Hostages, when his family's villa was captured in Wales, he enjoyed a carefree life, one befitting a magistrate's son.

His name was "Succat"; later purchased by Milcho, a local chieftain in northwest Ireland; the young man who would one day become the Patron Saint of Ireland, Patrick, now worked as a shepherd.

The rest, of course, is history.

A Happy & HEALTHY St. Patrick's Day to all!

"NYO"

Just heard that the Puerto Rican Day Parade has been cancelled for the first time in it's history. Sad

The cancellation of the St. Patrick's Day Parade last month was indeed a sign of what was to come. Sad

Hopefully, next year will bring back both parades, wonderful music and colorful costumes, as well as rerouted buses....... Wink

STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY, MY FRIENDS! Very Happy

Anderson Avenue, Bronx, 1987 (I must admit, I do like the "message" delivered on the painted political advertisement, where the old 9th Avenue El once thundered through!)

http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?8247

No buses in this view, but I thought it might make for an "honorable mention" for this topic. Wink

What buses (in 1987 and today) run in this general area?

Thanks.....

I saw in that pic, at that late date, the old c.1969-70 (in terms of when made) white type on blue background that signified Bronx street signs were still on display there.

W.B.:

One could, indeed, come out with a book dedicated to the history of New York City streets signs, beginning in the 19th century, and going up to the present day.

I , myself, have long been interested in the "Noo Yawk" street signs through the decades; how many changes since the day I started working downtown in 1979, and up to 2003, when I retired.

A lot of city history, sadly, that is all but totally neglected, except by the most dedicated urban archeologist.......

Here's an undated (classic!) view of a MaBSTOA Flex in two-tone blue, carrying a "RADIO JiT" poster (note, also, the small "VIA AVE. C" sign in the driver's window)......

No doubt from Hudson depot; they got all the 1973-74 Flxies allotted to MaBSTOA (7300-7361). These buses would also run on the M8 and M9 lines after they took over the routes from Avenue B & East Broadway in 1980 - which makes it all the more ironic that M13 would later be renumbered M8.

As always, I am most interested in your historical information..... Wink

Regarding the Flex New Looks (MaBSTOA and "EM-TEE-YAY") were there depots who only rostered Flexies, or were the Flexies "intermingled" with the GMC's at a given depot?

I'm guessing that the buses were "mixed" at the depots; were there depots where Flexies dominated?

Hudson only rostered all of the 1973-74 Flxies built for MaBSTOA (7300-7361 - in short no other MaBSTOA depot had any bus from that set), but were definitely intermixed with GM's from within the 5200-5525 series through to the first 20 (4800-4819) of the MaBSTOA T6H-5309A's. The 'Tee-Yay' Flxies of 1973-74 were scattered amongst the vast depots they had, with Manhattan getting a few starting with 7000.

As the Flxies began piling up through the last of 1977, they seemed to be more dominant in some depots than others, but always intermingled with GM's.
