.......a little more than six years prior to the last streetcars in Brooklyn in 1956, the final cars clattered over the Brooklyn Bridge from Park Row (the BMT El trains had ceased running over the span in 1944)
Ironically, the year after the streetcars vanished from Brooklyn's streets. the iconic Brooklyn Dodgers (originally the "Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers") bade farewell to the hallowed Ebbets Field, heading west to LA.
Yet another chapter in Brooklyn's rich and colorful history had come to end.
The still almost-new trolley buses disappeared in 1960.......

The unique two-level 9th Avenue depot (long since demolished) had the distinction of being the very last functioning streetcar facility in Brooklyn, when the last cars ran on October 31, 1956.
At the time of closing, the only remaining streetcar lines were the #35, and the #50..........

........a view of #1010 in much happier days; also, note the Old Look dimly visible in the background (note that photo caption info came from our late friend and leading bus historian, Mr. Linsky)......

Another unique PCC in the B&QT fleet was CLARK-built #1000; this car was also unique as it was the only Brooklyn PCC to have standee windows, commonplace on postwar cars.
Photo was taken at the 9th Avenue depot, which served the PCC's until the end in 1956......

While on the subject of Brooklyn's trolleys......
It is important to remember that the only PCC's to be found in New York ran in Brooklyn; PCC's could only be found in Manhattan at Park Row (until 1950), serving several routes that then crossed the Brooklyn Bridge.
Given the fact that Mayor La Guardia was so anti-streetcar, it's odd that PCC's were even purchased for the B&QT; not surprisingly, TARS would never see PCC's.
TARS, however, was did have some "modern" cars in their fleet, even though the company would never roster the now-iconic PCC.......

Here are extensive (color!) photo pages* showing ex-TARS cars operating in South America; other types of vintage streetcars are also shown here.
These photo are truly outstanding; a true "museum fleet" was then in daily operation when these excellent color photos were taken, several decades ago.
The "companion" page is in Portuguese, but one does not need to know the language to pore over the many rare, fascinating photos presented here......

*BONUS: Be sure to look for the vintage buses that can be seen in some of these rare photos!
*In South America, the ex-TARS cars were called "CENTEX" cars (center exit); they were reconfigured for single-ended operation, and also were equipped with trolley poles.

Regarding the ex-TARS streetcars that were sold for operations in South America......
Odd that Brooklyn's PCC fleet was more modern and up-to-date than the TARS units, but, instead, (with the exception of the few that went to museums) all were scrapped.
One might have thought that there would have been some foreign buyer for the B&QT streamliners; recall, also, that a number of ex-DC TRANSIT PCC's went overseas (some were even rebuilt into articulated units), while a number of ex-LA PCC's went to Egypt.
Too, PE's unique fleet of double-ended PCC's also went to South America, where they ran in MU trains, operating off of third rail.
In fact, quite a few ex-PE cars went south of the border after retirement, many wearing their distinctive PE paint schemes until they were finally retired.
Alas, the fates were not as kind to the one hundred PCC's that once clanged their way through the streets of Brooklyn........

Until 1950, Park Row was the only place in Manhattan where PCC's could be found (this photo was snapped after the massive BMT Park Row El terminal was torn down)
Ditto the underground terminal for B&QT trolleys at Delancey St.; the only time PCC's ever ran to this terminal was when they were assigned to fan trips......
