What was then the M-3 49th-50th Street Crosstown had a branch to Port Authority started in October 1971. This would therefore date to at the latest 1972. (This is the branch that retained the M27 number for long after the main branch to 42nd and 12th was rebranded M50 about 1989.)
Would have loved to see a '64 or '65 Flxible running on that route with that very front roll sign, in that very location. |

W.B.:
As always, interesting to learn more about the old bus routes/route numbers/destination sign readings/fonts, etc., regarding the old "Tee-Yay" and ""Em-Tee-Ay" lines.
I agree; I would also love to see a Flex displaying that same roller curtain display........

Just curious.......
Back in the day, did any of the Manhattan bus routes have destination signs reading "PENN STATION"?
Thanks......

Thanks....was pretty sure you had an answer!
Back in the day, if anyone wanted to transfer from either the PRR or the LIRR at Penn to Greyhound, all they had to do was walk right across the street......

The Grumman buses' Luminator text on their electronic signs originally used type also associated with National Semiconductor Corp. and visible on screens of Apple II computers:
Then their later displays (as on the T8J-204 RTS's made for TA and MaBSTOA) used a font as designated '5X7.fnt' on the below link:
http://www.rollsigngallery.com/esigns/lumfontgraphics.html
Again, I.M.H.O., for what they were, they are preferable to what you see today. |

MOST interesting......thanks for posting!
Going back at least 30 years, there was a "HUDSON BUS" (old NHBL) Grumman that I rode on a number of times (this bus might have been ex-MTA, but am not at all sure) whose signs were clearly "out-of-whack" and (AFAIK) were never repaired.
Had the signs been working correctly, the designation would have read:
"1 JOURNAL SQUARE"
Instead, the signs read:
"1 JOURNAJOURNA"
"JOURNAJOURNA" always reminded me of a remote South Seas island out of a 1940's-era Bob Hope/Bing Crosby/Dorothy LaMour "road" flick!

Agreed on both counts, 100%!
Like yourself, I am a "rollsign purist", and, IMHO, those signs were indeed timeless.......AND......easy to read!
In my area, back in the 1960's, some ("indy") buses featured white-on-red signs, which usually were used for :
"EXPRESS"
"GARAGE" (alternate reading: "NO PASSENGERS")
"CHARTER"
Ahhhh, gotta be getting old, here........

5217 also has an enormous pedestrian-catcher. I don't want to call it a cow-catcher. |

Joe:
I've heard the term "eclipse fender" used to describe such safety hardware; also, "basket fenders".
Though PS abandoned the use of these "fenders" by the early 1920's on revenue cars, a number of their work cars were still equipped with them through the 1930's..........

(No location given for this interesting and nostalgic "action" scene, circa-early 1980's)
Here we see a Fishbowl, FLXIBLE New Look and (just barely glimpsed) a GRUMMAN)
Though, clearly, this photo was snapped on a warm day, note the ad placard frame still covering the a/c unit of the Flxible......
