Think of the many millions, over the course of several decades, who once rode out to this now-gone ballpark to watch "The Amazins" in action, via the #7 IRT and the buses.....LOTS of buses!

This photo at the IRT Corona yards in 1964, depicts so much that has long since disappeared down the echoing corridors of time......
Here we see new WF "Bluebirds", as well a set of red R-33 "mainline" cars (seems that the roofs of these cars got pretty scruffy, rather quickly!)
The new Shea Stadium can be seen in the right background, towering majestically over the urban landscape, as it would for the next several decades.
Note, also, the IRT interlocking tower (no CBTC, back then!)
The old Corona shop buildings, likewise, have since vanished.......

(sidenote: Just heard on 1010 WINS that "The Amazins" won another game.....nice to hear some POSITIVE news for a change, instead of so much that is just too dang depressing!)

Anyone know what those silver things are standing up between the tracks in the foreground are? They don't appear to be signals or switchstands, but I can't be sure...
When I was a yard clerk for the Burlington, we had something that appeared slightly similar in our switching yard, that were 2 way PA speakers...the yardmaster could broadcast over all of them, or you could push a call button, and the yardmaster could converse with you. That was before everyone carried a radio...
These don't look like the same thing... |

I have been wondering the same thing; though I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable on the subways (especially regarding the subways of past years) I, also, am a bit puzzled as to what those posts between the tracks are for.
Something else in this photo that is worth a second glance; note the black-on-white "#7" displayed by ML R-33 #9017.
I've seen photos depicting new "Mainline" 33's running on the Flushing line prior to the arrival of the "Bluebirds", to give the straphangers of that line a glimpse of what would be coming their way soon (of course, the "ML" cars did not have the picture windows that the "WF" Bluebirds were equipped with)........

Corona yard, 2007 (note the old 1964-1965 World's Fair "UNISPHERE" in the left background)
R-62's have replaced the venerable old "Redbirds"; today, the 62's themselves are gone from the Flushing line, replaced by NTT rolling stock.
Change is constant.......

The train of R-29's at Willets Point (taken in 1964) is carrying a prominent "COME TO FAIR BY SUBWAY" sign up front.
Note, also, the route sign box is blank........

As I type these words, this photo at Corona is now 17 years old; the venerable "Redbirds" were then being phased out by R-62's (transferred from the IRT mainlines).
Today, the R-62's themselves have vanished from the Flushing line, replaced by NTT equipment.
To my eyes, at least, the MTA buses still seem "contemporary".......

Thanks for the clarification; I, myself, was leaning towards such a signal, but, not being 100% sure, I did not want to hazard a guess.

All:
Just thought that I would post this news here, as this thread was about the buses once seen at Shea Stadium; I just heard on 1010 WINS News Radio a short while ago of the sad passing of "The Amazin' Mets'' Tom Seaver (aka "Tom Terrific"), at age 75, due to multiple health issues.
May Tom be hitting homers at that big "Shea" in the sky, forever-and-a-day, with the loyal fans of days past arriving by #7 Flushing line IRT "Bluebirds".
My sincerest sympathies to Tom's family and friends.
You won't be forgotten, Tom!
