Fellows:
Only three buses are seen in this timeless photo of the immortal Shea Stadium (legendary home to the Amazin' NY Mets!), but I thought it was still worth sharing here.

Thanks for the photo. I remember seeing so many charter buses at Shea whenever I went to a Mets game. |

You are QUITE welcome!
Hope that this photo (circa-1965) will bring back some old memories for you, when you went out to Shea to see the "Amazins" play, so long ago.
Ahhh, the classic buses to be seen in this nostalgic view!

Still have my ticket stub from the first game played at Shea....
Dad took me out of school for it....
Unfortunately, the Pirates beat the Mets that day... |

How ironic, that the "Amazins" not only lost the FIRST game they ever played at Shea, but also, the LAST game played at Shea before it closed forever.
But, then again, 1969 was a VERY good year for the Amazin' New York Mets.......

Looks like the MTA does not want to 'advertise' Citibank...
When they connected the 23rd Street - Ely Avenue 'E' Train station with the 'G' Court Square (and '7' Court House Square) stations into one free transfer complex, there were large blue covers on the tile wall near the new connector passageways. They are in the shape of the Citibank logo. I have always suspected that it was put there by Citibank, who I am assuming paid for part of the contract for that, since their large service building is located there. And that the MTA took exception to its placing, and covered it.
I cannot guess any other explanation for them being there.... |

From what I have read on another online transit forum, it would seem that your suspicions are correct, regarding those blue covers.
Even though the old "House That Ruth Built" is no more, its replacement at least tries to replicate the old ball park, and, today in 2020, one can STILL say "We're gonna take in a game at Yankee Stadium".
Sadly, these days, Mets fans can no longer say: "Can't wait to hop on the #7 train out to Shea and watch the Amazins."
On my numerous Saturday subway excursions, I used to love to go out to Flushing Meadow on the #7, many years back, and walk over the bridge that spanned the Corona yard; the last time I did so was in 2002, when both the legendary "Redbirds" and the iconic Shea Stadium were both still in existence.
Many a year has passed since the those days...........we've lost a lot of "Noo Yawk" history since then......

Great link; a lot if interesting information and photos.....will enjoy really "getting into it" later today!
Modern subway station styling simply leaves me cold; to me, the original IRT-style/BMT mosaics were truly classic examples of how a subway station should be furnished.
Even the IND's more modern approach (1930's style) to station decor at least had a "stylish" appeal to it; IMHO, things began to change when a number of stations had their historic tilework covered over with those bland, insipid "refrigerator tiles" of the 70's.
I'm quite fortunate that I frequntly rode the subways "for fun" (as well as for commuting) back in the old days; when I started working downtown in 1979, the oldest cars in use were the R-10's, and many stations still had not only their original tilework and mosaics, but also, their original change booths and turnstiles.
Yeah, I really miss those days....were a LOT of fun while it all lasted!
