Back in the mid 80s when I worked for Hudson General ( long term and airline connection buses and AA crew buses ) they got the contract for the planemates at TWA. I was sent out to train on them as a spare driver. My first thought on seeing them was what did I get into. The first thing I was told was beside watching around you keep a eye out looking up for choppers.

Tiny Tim:

Certainly, that job HAD to have some days that were more "interesting" than others! Wink

Indeed, it had to be light-years removed from driving a "regular" transit bus! Shocked

Interesting! I worked part time for AA (Eagle) from 1994 until 2002, driving buses airside at JFK between terminal 9 and the outer ramp to load Eagle regional aircraft. I also made short connection transfer runs airside to terminal 8, and 7. When AA bought TWA, I ran a regular airside transfer schedule between terminal 9 and 5. I also ran a connection directly from the Concorde jetbridge at terminal 7, and the Eagle ATR flight to DCA. The combination was faster from London to Washington then taking direct conventional nonstops from LHR to IAD.

I also would vary my routes between terminal 5 and 9 either 'clockwise' around the airport, or counter clockwise for variety. It was a great opportunity to see up close and personal, all aircraft and airlines serving JFK.
Even used to run employees airside over to Hangar 10, at times.

I used to love to see those Plane-Mates and wished I had the opportunity to operate them. The only ones in regular use at the time were at the Delta Terminal. The former TWA ones were stored and kept in reserve by the Port Authority for emergency evacuations. I recall that the Plane-Mates were to be given the same right of way when moving, as taxiing aircraft...

That was a great part time job...loved it better than my "real job" at Adirondack. I retired from that when I reached 55, with a lifetime AA pass...the real reason I worked there. And just in time, since the new AA terminal ended all busing to regional aircraft...

Another classic "flying boat", the SIKORSKY VS-44s *

*A very interesting story (and photos) here; note, also, that the lone preserved example carried passengers until 1967! Shocked
