Jules Verne himself would have been quite proud, had he conjured up this highly-unorthodox "seagoing trolley".....(!!)
This one is a HOOT!!

Here's another VERY interesting page* of the "Daddy Longlegs" seagoing "trolley" (note that UK law demanded that a trained sea captain be at the helm (or, at least on board!)

These old photos HAVE to be SEEN to be BELIEVED!!!!! |

Interesting to note that Volk's "Daddy Longlegs" was powered by GE electric motors; a number of London's trams (as well as early Tube trains) also used GE components.
Also, ACF built a number of early London tube stock; the cars were shipped to Great Britain (unassembled) and were re-constructed in England.
In fact, ACF later built a plant near London.
Regarding, again, the "Daddy LongLegs":
In the world of historical electric traction, this "unit", without a doubt, had to be the most unorthodox and most unusual piece of equipment ever built ('nuff said!)
This is not surprising in the least, especially when you have a sea captain at the helm of a "trolley" that carries a life boat and life belts!
And God bless all that sail in her.........

While on the topic of "oddball" trolleys......
No one loves old streetcars more than Your's Truly, BUT, even I have to admit that this sinister-looking car had to be the UGLIEST streetcar ever to ride the rails; not only is this car downright UGLY, it is also SINISTER looking....it actually (IMHO) looks EVIL!!
