traildriver:
One could only imagine what transit in New York might have been like had the "Beach" concept caught on, to the point it was practicle (THAT would have been interesting unto itself!)
Recall, even perhaps more of the "Jules Vern" camp, Mr. R. H. Gilbert, who, in the 1870's, proposed an elevated railway for Manhattan, whose cars would be propelled by atmospheric pressure; massive ornamental arches would have carried the twin tubes above the street.
Passengers would have been carried up to the stations (located about about a mile apart from each other) via pneumatic elevators.
Years ago, I imagined the 1964 "AMF" World's Fair monorail trains gliding across the Hudson, running beneath the main roadway of the GWB, between New York and NJ (DANG, WHAT SIGHT!!)
The "Flying Lady" of the 1910's had the distinction of being the only monorail to operate in the City (save, of course, for the "AMF" System at the World's Fair)
Imagine a monorail system (based upon the Wuppertal system in Germany) straddling the West Side Highway, the BQE, or the LIE?
Indeed, it would have been a viable alternative to fighting with rush-hour traffic, not to mention parking problems!

See:

*Look for heading: "Rapid Transit Visionary" (Mr. R. H. Gilbert was even involved with the CNJ!)

Just did a little research, and came across this interesting (and most intriguing!) page on the "Crystal Palace Pneumatic Railway".........

Regarding "single rail" transit operations........
There is an artist rendition shown in "BUSES, TROLLEYS, and TRAMS" (Chas. A. Dunbar, 1967) depicting a CTA "bus train" operating on a fixed-guiderail "busway" along one of the expressways (this proposal dated to the early late 1950's/1960's)
The buses depicted were postwar TWIN COACHES, operating in a three-car MU train(!!)
According to the text, the individual buses would assemble at some outer surburban point, and then be coupled into a train.
After MU connections were made, the "train" would head into Chicago (now, only one driver would be required)
Upon entering Chicago, the buses would be disconnected from one another, and other drivers would then take over the trailing buses, and then go on to their respective destinations.
Outbound, of course, the reverse would have held true.
Just before this unique plan was shelved, there were plans to replace the guide rails with sensors aboard the buses themselves, picking up signals from cables underneath the pavement.
The CTA had also been involved in talks with GE, regarding this project........
